Russell Darwin Bennington, 89, of Hillsboro, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at the Hospice of Dayton.

He was born Dec. 15, 1921 in Blue Creek, the son of the late Ernest and Kathryn Culbertson Bennington.

Mr. Bennington was a retired electrician with the Randall Company in Wilmington and had worked for the Lynchburg Lumber Company. He was a member of the Pricetown Church of Christ, Lynchburg F&AM Lodge 178 and had served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the battles and campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Della Johnson Bennington, whom he had married on July 19, 1986; three children, Cynthia (Robert) Brodess of Springfield, Rebecca Sue (Mike) McCoy of Washington Court House and John William (Cori) Bennington of Morrow; two stepchildren, Rhonda Ison of Dayton and Karen (Richard) Webb of Dayton; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, June Jones of Maryland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Jones Bennington on Dec. 12, 1984 and by nine brothers and sisters.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 at the Lynchburg Fire and Rescue, Community Room, 8123 S.R. 135, Lynchburg, Ohio 45142. The Highland County Honor Guard will present military honors. A celebration of life will continue until 3 p.m. in the Community Room.
