Rosalie G. Townsend, 81, of Martinsville died Tuesday, July 10 at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 13, 1931 in Highland County, the daughter of the late Robert and Elsie Thompson Rankin.

Mrs. Townsend was a wonderful homemaker, loved music and was an accomplished singer. She often sang at weddings, funerals and also on radio, at stage events and with her brothers and sisters in the Morrisville Quartet. She loved spending winters in Florida. She was very very good playing shuffle board and loved singing in the church choir and spending time with her many friends there but when spring came, she longed to return to her farm and solitude of her home (the little green chapel in the woods) and was glad and happy to get back.

She was a beautiful woman and person to all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Hugh Townsend; three children, H. Vaughn Townsend, M.D. of Martinsville, Mellody (Ralph) Russo of Rochester, N.Y., and Dara (Chuck) Caudill of Anna Marie Island, Fla.; many grandchildren; and two brothers, Virgil (Jani) Rankin of Richwood and Keith (JoAnn) Rankin of New Vienna.

She was preceded in death by her son, Trace E. Townsend on May 13, 2004; two sisters, Wilma Heldt and Linda Rankin; one brother, Kenneth Rankin; and a granddaughter, Mallory Rose, Wurzburg in 2004.

She had requested that no public services be held.

Memorials may be made to the Martinsville United Methodist Church, 129 West S.R. 28, Martinsville, Ohio 45146 or to Community Care Hospice, P.O. Box 123, Wilmington, Ohio 45177.
