Orris Elvin Fields, Jr., 81, of Bradenton, Fla., died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011 at the Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton.
He was born May 5, 1929 in Morrisville, Ohio, the son of the late Orris Elvin and Crete Purdy Fields, Sr.
Mr. Fields had been a lifelong farmer, had driven a school bus for the Wilmington City Schools for over 32 years, and owned and operated the Central Mutual Insurance Agency for 22 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army; had been inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 1997; served for 25 years on the 4-H Council; served on the Clinton-Highland County Water Board for five years; was a member of the Martinsville United Methodist Church, where he had held several offices; was a member of the Lions Club; and had served as a trustee for 12 years for the School Employees Retirement System, serving two of those years as the president.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Donovan Fields whom he had married on Jan. 25, 1953 in Morrisville; one daughter, Jonda Fields of Bradenton, Fla.; one son, James (Lorrie) Fields of Bradenton, Fla.; one grandson, Scott Fields; one brother, Orville Fields of Wilmington; two sisters, May Florence Munson of Lebanon and Marie Williams of Macon, Ga.; two mentally adopted children, Tammy Highley and Melinda Allen; four mentally adopted grandchildren, Robby and Becca Highley, Clay Harmon and Thomas Allen; and seven nieces and one nephew.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19th at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home in Lynchburg. Burial will follow in the Martinsville IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, Feb. 18th from 5-8 p.m. at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, P.O.
