Mary L. "Tootsie" Mercer, 82, of Hillsboro, passed away on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 in Hillsboro.

She was born in Springfield to the late Forest and Marie (Baker) Mercer on April 10, 1930.

She graduated from Midway (Sedalia, Ohio) High School and also from the American Institute of Banking in Springfield.

She was employed for 19 years by Lagonda, now Huntington, National Bank. She was then employed for 10 years by the IRS in Covington, Ky., and retired from there on disability. Later, she was employed part-time, and retired from Continental Cablevision in Springfield.

She was a charter member of Risen Christ Lutheran Church. She was also a member of American Association of Retired Persons and of the Animal Welfare League.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy Shaffer (Wayne Laughman); nephews, Michael Shaffer (Chadwick Bricker), and Charles “Bud” (Lisa) Boggs; nieces, Lorrie (Dennis) Reeder, Debra (Ben) Parker; great-nieces, Beth and Molly Parker; great-nephews, Chase Boggs and Kaiden Reeder; former brother-in-law, Billie “Jack” Boggs and Ralph Shaffer; many relatives, including special cousins, Glenna Mae Kadel, Florence Hostetler, Bill Bryan, Don Bryan and John (Gayle) Baker, and friends, also of Springfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Forest and Marie Mercer; and a sister, Norma Jean Boggs.

Friends may call on Monday, Feb. 25 from 6-8 p.m. at the Jackson Lytle and Lewis Funeral Home in Springfield.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the funeral home, with Pastor Bill Blain officiating. Burial will follow at Vale Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society or to the Animal Welfare in her honor.
