Mary Ellen McKenzie, 61, of Gahanna died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012 at the Mount Carmel East Medical Center in Columbus.

She was the youngest of four daughters born to J. Harold and Genevieve McKenzie on Oct. 16, 1950.

Mary grew up in the Belfast community where she attended elementary school. She transferred to Hillsboro for High School, graduating in 1967.

Following graduation, she moved to Columbus and became an Ohio Bell long-distance operator, advancing to middle management with AT&T. She retired from the phone company with 30 years of service.

She enjoyed traveling and reading. In recent years she became passionate about paper crafts and card making with friends. Many family and friends were recipients of beautiful, personalized cards that she had made.

She was preceded in death by her sister Wilma J. Martin (1972), father J. Harold McKenzie (1982), and mother Genevieve McKenzie (1991).

She is survived by her sisters, Betty Moles and Ann McKenzie of Middletown; nieces, Sheryl (Bob) Martin-Smith of Port Clinton, Jacque (Jim) Steritz of Lake Village, Ark., and Michelle (Vinton) Roush of Fairfield; nephews, John Martin (Phil Varasso) of Columbus, Mike (Jenifer) Moles of Batavia, and John (Cathy) Moles of Moraine; 14 great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-nephew, as well as several cousins and many dear friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Belfast United Methodist Church, where friends may call from 12:30-2 p.m.

Pastor Mick Parks and Pastor Kenneth Woleab will officiate. Burial will follow in the Coss Cemetery at Belfast.

Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
