Martha Ellen Lukens, 96, of Hillsboro died Thursday evening, March 15, 2012 at her home.

She was born Jan. 28, 1916 in Hillsboro, the daughter of the late Carey and Winnie Smith West.

Mrs. Lukens had been employed by Myers Seed Company following her graduation from Hillsboro High School in 1934. She later became the office manager for the Hillsboro Veterinary, Clinic which she and her late husband, Dr. William Lukens, had owned and operated for 42 years in Hillsboro. She was a member of the Hillsboro First Presbyterian Church where she had served as an elder and deacon, was active in the Presby-Weds, was a founding member of the Hillsboro Junior Mothers Club, a member of the Junior Women's Club and had served as a board member of the Highland County Senior Citizens and the Highland County Historical Society.

She is survived by two sons, James W. (Elaine) Lukens of Carmel and Richard A. (Sara) Lukens of Sinking Spring; one grandson, Richard W. Lukens of Sinking Spring; one sister-in-law, Mrs. James Mueller of Plymouth, Mich.; special friends and extended family, Gregory E. Rand family and the Darlene (Dave) Richmond family; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Lukens on Nov. 19, 2001, one daughter, Jean Ann Lukens on July 26, 1997; and two sisters, Margaret Wheat and Frances Shafer.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, March 26 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Rev. Maurice Mitchell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
