John Franklin Upp, 85, of Greenfield, died Saturday, December 9, 2009 at Hearth and Care in Greenfield.  He was born August 31, 1924 in Nottoway County, Virginia the son of the late Heber and Mary Elizabeth Custer Upp. John was affectionately known as "Uncle Johnny".  Knowing him was to know a true child-like being. Happy and always playful.  His life inspired his 2 nieces, who are dedicated to the education of children and especially those who are challenged, to donate and have named for him "La Cocina de Juanito” (JOHNNY'S KITCHEN).  On a small Island off the Yucatan Peninsula is THE LITTLE YELLOW SCHOOL HOUSE life skills room with a kitchen to teach these children how to survive. (littleyellowschoolhouse.org)  “Uncle Johnny" has now touched many lives and will continue to do so. Johnny has left his mark in the world.  He is survived by two nieces, Charlene Maresca and Lindell Lehrer, both of North Carolina.  Private graveside services were held at the convenience of the family in the Dunn’s Chapel Cemetery.  The Turner & Son Funeral home, Hillsboro, served the family.
