James Walter “Jim” Furbee

James Walter “Jim” Furbee, 77, of Hillsboro, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, at the Hospice of Hope Inpatient Center in Seaman.

He was born on November 13, 1947, in Fairmont, W.Va., the son of the late Howard and Marjorie (McCord) Furbee. 

Jim proudly served his country as a Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Navy and later retired as a sales representative for the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company. He was a faithful member of Highland Community Church.

On Sept. 21, 1968, Jim married his loving wife, Shirley (Thorne) Furbee, in Mannington, W.Va. Together, they shared nearly 57 years of marriage. 

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two children, Joe Furbee of Cary, N.C. and Elizabeth (John) Halvey of Westport, Conn.; four grandchildren, Abrah, Seth, Peyton and Olivia Furbee; one brother, Robert Furbee of Columbus; and two sisters, Patricia Ashburn of Piqua and Suzie Hawks of St. Marys; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Ronnie Robison of Clewiston, Fla.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his twin sons, Timothy and Thomas Furbee; one brother, Howard Furbee; and two sisters, Mary Heldreth and Jane Hoover.

A celebration of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at Highland Community Church, with Pastor Kenneth Johnson officiating. Military honors, conducted by the Highland County Veterans Honor Guard, will follow at the church. Burial of cremains will take place at the convenience of the family in the Furbee-Hibbs Cemetery in Mannington, W.Va.

Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
