James W. "Bill" Collins, 86, of Greenfield, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at his home.
He was born June 18, 1923 in Hillsboro, Ohio, the son of the late Absalom Leroy and Ada (Johnson) Collins.
He was the owner and operator of Collins Packing Company in Greenfield and Highlander Ford Company in Greenfield and Bainbridge. He was the past exalted ruler of the Elks lodge, a member of the Eagles lodge, and former State Representative. He was a member of the St. Benignus Catholic Church of Greenfield. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII and later served during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by a son, William A. "Bill" Collins of Medina, Ohio; two daughters, Connie (Phil) Clyburn and Carol Collins, both of Greenfield; five grandchildren, Julie (Tim) Keegan of Greenfield, Andy (Joann) Clyburn of California, Chris (Melissa) Collins of California, Mark (Jessica) Clyburn of Greenfield, and Katie (Steve) Weaver of Cincinnati; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; and special friend Kay Flynn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Collins, who passed away Jan. 22, 2002; and a brother, John R. "Jack" Collins.
A mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4 at the St. Benignus Catholic Church of Greenfield with Father Mike Paraniuk officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery of Greenfield, where military rites will be performed by the Concerned Veterans of Greenfield.
A visitation will be held noon-5 p.m. Sunday at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield, with Veterans Appreciation Services to be held at 5 p.m., followed by the Rosary service.
