Eric Lee Morehead

Eric Lee Morehead, 69, of Greenfield, Buckskin Township, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at his home after battling stomach cancer for six months.

He was born in Greenfield on March 7, 1943, the son of Harley and Bessie (Looney) Morehead.

He is survived by his wife, Carol (Frizzell) Morehead, whom he married June 8, 1963; one daughter, Leann (Jeff) Williams of Greenfield; one son, Robert (Andrea Baird) Morehead of Asheville, N.C.; and one granddaughter, Carlee Williams of Greenfield. Other surviving members of his family are sisters Ruthanne (Donald) Mathews, Nina (Hubert) Lancaster and Josephine Brewer; sisters-in-law Erma (Eugene) Green, Eleanor (John) Morehead and Joann (Donald) Morehead; and sisters- and brothers-in-law Connie (Frizzell) and Sam Marting and Sue (Frizzell) and Mike Zint.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie (Looney) Morehead; his father, Harley Morehead; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Marian (Bayless) Frizzell; three brothers, Eugene, John and Donald Morehead; and a stillborn sister, Deloris.

Better known as “Lee” to family and friends, he attended The Ohio State University on a football scholarship and played for Woody Hayes. Upon graduating from OSU in 1965, he and his wife moved to Flint, Mich., where he worked as a pharmaceutical representative with Merck, Sharp and Dome, but his true passion was farming. He moved his family back to Greenfield in 1974, at which time he began farming until his retirement in 2006. Lee and his wife also had a catering business called “The Smokin’ Meat Wagon”, which they operated with his high school friends for over 13 years. Throughout the years, they cooked for many area weddings, receptions and class reunions. They also cooked for the Franklin County Cancer Society fundraisers, the OSU press corps before the home football games, local field days and the Fayette County Cattlemen’s Association.

Lee had a passion for woodworking and built many unique custom pieces of furniture for family, friends and acquaintances. He was also a founding member and president of the McClain Athletic Foundation, which was instrumental in refurbishing the McClain football field and building and furnishing the McClain Athletic Field House. Lee was also a Mason, a 35-year member of the Scottish Rite and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield. People who knew Lee knew his loves in life were family, farming, woodworking, his pipe and especially his dry wit.

The funeral service will be held at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield on Monday, May 7, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Terry Washburn officiating and Otis Wagner delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Greenfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
