Dennis D. Thompson, 78, of Hillsboro died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday evening, June 30, 2010 at the Crestwood Nursing Center.
He was born March 19, 1932 in Washington Court House, the son of the late Walter and Mabel Holton Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a retired school teacher and basketball coach having served for thirty five years in the Whiteoak and Belfast school systems. He had also retired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources with over twenty years of service with Rocky Fork Lake and Paint Creek State Parks. He was a 1951 graduate of Marshall High School, received his Bachelor Degree from Wilmington College and his Master Degree from Xavier University. He was a member of the Hillsboro Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk, Lodge 361, the Hillsboro Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1161 and a U. S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Mary June Blair Thompson whom he had married on December 5, 1956 in Indiana; one daughter, Susan Royse of Hillsboro, one son, Steve (Carolyn) Thompson of Dry Ridge, Ky.; five grandchildren, Meghan Thompson and Alex Thompson of Dry Ridge, Kentucky, Holly, John and Lee Royse Jr. of Hillsboro; one brother, Byron (Nancy) Wisecup of Hillsboro; two nieces, Vicki (Jeff) Rhude of Hillsboro, Dinah (Jim) Phillips of Hillsboro; and special friends, Bob (Sherry) Morrison of Hillsboro and Neil (Sharon) Countryman of Chillicothe.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his foster parents, Lyman and Vesta Wisecup; and three brothers, John, Charles and Howard Thompson.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family on Saturday, July 3 at the Hillsboro Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Highland County Honor Guard. There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Denny’s Life will be held for family and friends at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 28 the at the Friendship Pavilion, Paint Creek State Park. Friends are invited to join with the family from 4 p.m until 7 p.m. at the Friendship Pavilion at Paint Creek State Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Kentucky 41056. The Turner & Son Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
