Betty A. Taylor, 88, of Leesburg, passed away Friday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2012 at her home surrounded by her children.
She was born Jan. 15, 1924 in New Petersburg, to the late Harley and Pauline (Perie) Tompkins.
A mother, grandmother and homemaker, Betty was a lifelong resident of Highland County and graduated from Fairfield High School in Leesburg in 1942. She was a 45-year member and Past Matron of Leesburg Chapter #57 Order of the Eastern Star and served as Grand Representative of Florida in 1989-1990. She was a member of the Leesburg Friends Church, The United Society of Friends Women and the Questing Quakers Sunday School Class. Betty was proud of her Quaker heritage and belonged to the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society and the First Families and Second Families of Highland County. In previous years, she participated in the Highland County Historical Society, Highland County Republican Central Committee, Wednesday Club, Altruistic Society and was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.
In 1947, she married Joe Taylor, who passed away in 1996.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Linda Taylor and Steve and Debbie Taylor, all of Leesburg; her daughter, Tracy Taylor of Leesburg; four grandsons, Marcus Taylor, Ryan (Melissa) Taylor, Nick Long and JP Napier; a granddaughter, Tiffany (Clint) Taylor; a great-grandson, Braxton Taylor; four great-granddaughters, Aubrey Taylor, Madison Taylor, Mason Taylor and Elana Napier; a sister, Mary Ann (Fred) Fearing of Hudson, Mass.; a son-in-law, Danny Long; a special cousin, Gene (Jean) Dixon; an aunt, Lorene Perie; a nephew, Don (Helen) Smith; two nieces, Brenda Cornett and Shari (Jim) Gaffney; four great-nieces; and several nieces and nephews by marriage.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Long; a grandson, Barney Long; her brother, Harold Tompkins; and sisters Ruth Ellen Smith, Jane Rhonemus, Isabel Baldwin, Sara Paulson, Donna Jean Tompkins and Bertie Lou Tompkins.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 at the Leesburg Friends Church. Pastor John Fitzgerald will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hardin's Creek Cemetery at Bridges. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012 at the church and again from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Eastern Star Services will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.
