The Hillsboro City Council Finance Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb.

Highland County Recycling has announced that they have added two new drop-off locations for residential recycling.  Residents will now find drop-off containers in Sinking Spring at the Brushcreek Fire House, and in Mowrystown at the old feed mill on West Main Street/Rt. 321.  “We are trying to make household recycling as convenient as possible for our residents” reports Dori Bishop, Outreach Specialist at Highland County Recycling.  These recycling boxes are for residential use only.  Schools, businesses and industries may contact Dori Bishop at 393-4080 for alternative resources for recycling.

All available crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 continue working to treat, plow and clear the state highway system of snow and ice. Precipitation varies from flurries to a light snow, and the rate of accumulation has diminished. In much of the District 9 area, routes are lightly to partly snow covered, with some spot locations of clear pavement.

Crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 will be working during the overnight hours; however, roads may be mostly snow covered for early morning motorists. The next wave of this week's snowstorm has moved into the area, and additional snow accumulation is expected through Wednesday afternoon. Along with additional precipitation, wind gusts are likely to cause blowing and drifting snow.

Tuesday's snow showers and the forecast for more snow on Wednesday have prompted many local schools to close for the second time this week. The following schools have announced closings for Wednesday, Feb. 10:

Hillsboro received a $5 million ARRA subsidy to combine with a $10.2 million low-interest loan totaling $15.2 million to increase the capacity at the wastewater treatment plant and add wastewater flow equalization to eliminate wet weather by-passes to Clear Creek.

As expected, Hillsboro City Council voted to accept a proposed ordinance from the Hillsboro Fire Department that mandates as of Jan. 1, 2010, there will be an annual fire inspection performed on every commercial business and multiple family dwelling in the city of Hillsboro. Council voted to waive the fire department's proposed fees at its Monday meeting. 

Just following last weekend's dose of winter weather, another storm has moved into the area, and Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 crews are at it again. A steady snowfall since approximately 1 a.m. has left routes throughout the area snow covered, and ODOT District 9 crews have been plowing and treating the state highway system since the storm began.

Area students returned to the classroom on Monday, but not for long. A snowstorm that arrived a few hours earlier than anticipated has caused numerous school closings, including Hillsboro City Schools, Bright Local Schools, Highland County Christian School, Highland County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Southern State Community College, Adams County/Ohio Valley Schools and others.

Marine Corps Pvt. Joshua S. Thomas, son of Phyllis and Paul Kneipp of Hillsboro, Ohio, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

Darla (Snoddy) Moore, a teacher at West Liberty-Salem Schools, has been elected by the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (OCTELA) to speak at the organization's State conference in March.  OCTELA was founded in 1957 as a professional organization promoting English Language Arts prekindergarten through college.  OCTELA is the only Ohio affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
