Senate passes Husted-backed resolution highlighting foster care families

WASHINGTON – Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) has cosponsored Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ben Ray Luján’s (D-N.M.) resolution to recognize May as National Foster Care Month. Their resolution passed the Senate this week.

The legislation brings awareness to the challenges facing children in foster care and encourages Congress to implement policies that improve their lives and support foster parents.

“Loving foster families offer stability and guidance when kids may need it most. My parents adopted me from foster care. I’ve seen how transformational a child’s first years of life can be, and strengthening the foster care system gives kids a better chance to achieve their version of the American dream. I’m honored to shine a light on foster families and the kids they love,” said Husted.

The number of foster children in Ohio has continued to rise during the opioid crisis, outpacing the number of foster families in the state. An estimated 50% of all children who have entered foster care have one or both parents struggling with substance abuse. Ohio’s foster care system serves more than 16,000 boys and girls, yet there are only 7,200 licensed foster families filling the need for welcoming homes, according to a recent study.

Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) also cosponsored the resolution.
