Highlanders Chapter Sons of the American Revolution to launch America 250 celebration with liberty tree planting ceremony
On Friday, Sept. 26, Highland County Highlanders Chapter Sons of the American Revolution will mark the start of its participation in the America 250-Ohio commemoration with a community event at Liberty Park in Hillsboro. The event, beginning at 1:30 p.m., will feature the planting of a patriot elm tree as part of the statewide Heritage Tree Program. The event will take place at Liberty Park Veterans Memorial which is located at 201 Diamond Drive in Hillsboro.
The tree planting will serve as the official kickoff of Highland County’s America 250 planning, building momentum toward a multi-day celebration in July 2026 honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary and the unveiling of the Highland County Revolutionary War Memorial at the courthouse.
The Liberty Tree, our country’s first symbol of freedom: On the morning of Aug. 14, 1765, the people of Boston awakened to discover two effigies hanging from an elm tree in protest of the hated Stamp Acts. From that day forward that elm became know as “The Liberty Tree.”
It stood in silent witness to countless meetings, speeches, and celebrations and became the rallying place for the Sons of Liberty. In August of 1775, as a last act of violence prior to their evacuation of Boston, British soldiers cut it down and burned it because it was such a powerful and beloved symbol of American resistance, protest and revolution.
The community is invited to attend the tree planting and dedication at the Liberty Park Veterans Memorial which is located at 201 Diamond Drive in Hillsboro at 1:30 p.m.
