Discover the history of the Ursuline wood carvings

Beautiful carvings in the Sacred Heart Chapel and Ursuline Archives will be explored at the Dragonfly Village during a presentation by Amy Dehan, Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the Cincinnati Art Museum. 

She will discuss the Cincinnati Art Carved Furniture Movement of the 1800s, highlighting the Ursuline artifacts. Benn Pittman, a noted 19h century wood carver at the University of Cincinnati School of Design, taught the Ursuline Sisters how to use native cherry and oak from the convent grounds to create intricately carved items. The Sisters shared their wood crafting skills with students who attended the School of the Brown County Ursulines. 

The program will be held at the Ursuline Archives, 20860 S.R. 251, St. Martin at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1. This is the site of the former Ursuline convent, school of the Brown County Ursulines and Chatfield College.  

Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. 

Also mark your calendar for Pulling Out All the Stops, featuring the Roosevelt organ in Sacred Heart Chapel. The program will be conducted by Thea Tjepkema, a Friends of Music Hall historian, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.
