Altrusa International of Highland County continues to focus on improving and supporting literacy with students in Highland County.
At the beginning of the school year, our club purchased and distributed new books to all students in the county from PreK through fifth grade. Preschool students were added to the project for the 2025-26 school year.
Recently, the club offered grants to all sixth-grade teachers to purchase books for their classrooms. Grants were awarded to John Blagg from Lynchburg-Clay Local School District and Paige Basford from Greenfield Exempted Village School District. John chose multiple copies of the same title for a classroom teaching tool, and Paige chose a variety of titles to complete some sets to increase her classroom library.
The preschool and sixth-grade projects were made possible from generous donations from Merchants National Bank, Eagles Aerie 1161 and NCB.
Pictured are the recipients of the award with some of their book selections along with Altrusa member Shannon Yochum.
