Local teams golf at sectionals; Mustangs advance to district play

The McClain, Lynchburg-Clay, Fairfield and Whiteoak boys golf teams competed in Southeast District sectional boys golf tournaments Sept. 26-27, with the LC Mustangs advancing to the district round.

In the Division III tournament at the Jaycees Golf Course Sept. 27, Lynchburg-Clay qualified for districts with a third-place team finish and a score of 354. The event was won by West Union with a score of 339, followed by North Adams (345) in second, Manchester in fourth (368) and Valley in fifth (368) to round out the teams, with the top five teams moving on.

The Mustangs were led by junior Saxen Wilkin, who shot a 79, including a 39 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine. He tied for third place overall out of the 70 golfers at the tournament.

Other scores for the district-qualifying Mustangs included: Cody Bell, 89; Braedon West, 90; Cole Wells, 96; and Austin Bell, 110. The Division III district boys golf tournament will be held Monday, Oct. 2 at the Portsmouth Elks. 

The Fairfield Lions were eighth overall as a team, and their leading golfer was sophomore Brody Fauber with a score of 95. Also competing for FHS were: Otis Cockerill, 97; Hayden Crusie, 103; Titan Crowder, 104; and Blaine Fauber, 109.

Whiteoak was 13th overall at sectionals. Two seniors, Kaden Moon-Stone and Isaiah Rowe, tied with a score of 104 to lead the Wildcats. Other WHS scores included: Eli Roberts, 109; Christian Hite, 119; and Zander Roades, 132.

Also at the Jaycees Golf Course, McClain’s boys golf team competed Tuesday, Sept. 26 in the Division II Southeast District sectional.

Their team of four juniors had the following scores: Zane Adams, 98; Leland Ewry, 110; Jeremy Webb, 111; and Alex Perie, 128.
