There are no people lined up to cross the border

To the editor:

I was born in Greenfield Ohio  and raised in Columbus. I served  on active duty for 30 years. I read the article on US Border Crossings and find it untruthful and misleading.

I live in S Texas and have traveled 4 times in the past 2 months to Eagle Pass TX / Piedras Negras MX which has frequently been listed as the leading point of illegal entry by  Texas Governor Abbott.  There are no people lined up to cross. I find it unethical and unAmerican to write an article that is filled with misrepresentations.  The news has an ethical obligation to present both sides of the story and not pick a dog in the fight when reporting on issues.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released operational statistics for June 2024, which show a significant decline in migrant encounters following a Presidential Proclamation announced June 4, 2024, by President Biden to temporarily suspend the entry of certain noncitizens across the southern border.

Border Patrol encounters between ports of entry were 29% lower than in May 2024 and were the lowest monthly total for the Border Patrol along the southwest border since January 2021 as well as lower than the number of encounters between ports of entry in June 2019, the last comparable year prior to the pandemic. CBP monthly reporting can be viewed on CBP’s Stats and Summaries. This information was not in the article.

Shame on The Highland county Press for being so biased. When the press misleads its readers it becomes part of the problem and not part of the solution. The press has responsibility to give people all the facts of the story. Freedom dies when truth is distorted. I doubt the paper’s editor will post my response, but they know they have failed their readers when they let partisan feelings drive their reporting.

••• Publisher's note: I have no idea which story you refer to – since you fail to mention it – but rest assured, there are numerous reports and videos of illegals crossing into the U.S. in the last four years. The HCP uses multiple and credible news services which report from the border. I trust their accuracy. – Rory Ryan.

There's two paragraphs in the middle of that mess that looks like they were cut and pasted straight out of a White House press release.
Thirty years of active duty in what? With those run-on sentences and punctuation, 30 days in a English Composition class would have been helpful.

You picked the only 4 days in the previous 4 years when illegal aliens weren't crossing in droves...perhaps they were tipped off about your travels.
