A return to reason
To the editor:
This is an open letter to Highland County Press columnist Gary Lewis.
Dear Mr. Lewis,
For the most part, I have been quite impressed with the quality of the articles in the Highland County Press since the change in ownership. Given Mr. Ryan's stated conservatism, I expected the opinion page to be just another outlet for right wing talking points but, except for your articles, I have been pleasantly surprised. Your 'History not on Obama's side" article in the December 5 edition, however, has given me a glimmer of hope that even a practitioner of the new McCarthyism is capable of objective analysis of President Obama rather than outrageous personal attacks based largely distortions and outright lies.
I welcome thoughtful analysis of the president's performance in office and a return of some conservatives to civil discussion and putting the good of the country over the good of the Republican Party.
I once described myself as strongly Republican-leaning, but like many others since the party has cleansed itself of moderates and dedicated itself lock step to Reagonomocs that has bankrupted the country, the imperialism of George Bush that has made the United States the greatest threat to world peace in the opinion of most of the world's population and to seeking power via lies and fear mongering; I no longer do so and am far from alone.
An article by Andrew Sullivan, http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com pretty much sums up my feelings. Please read it and click onto the links as well.
Hoping that your "History not on Obama's side" article represents a return to reason and an end to ultra partisanship.
Sincerely,
Charles Leach
Lynchburg
