Cost of Issue 4 a small price to pay

To the editor:

Over sixty years ago some people in Highland County saw the need for an agency that could assist landowners in implementing much needed conservation practices on their farms. This agency became the Highland Soil and Water Conservation District and was the first District formed in Ohio. Now there is a SWCD office in every county forming the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

In the early 1980’s we were introduced and guided into a new method of farming by the Highland SWCD. That method was no-till farming which has proved to be an excellent conservation practice for a lot of farms in Highland County. With the help of cover crops and grass waterways, no-till farming slows the rapid runoff of excess water, thus greatly reducing soil erosion and nutrient loss into our ditches and streams. This is an asset not only to farmers but to all residents of Highland County.

No-till farming and the many other conservation practices planned and implemented by the Highland SWCD could have only been a dream for those who formed the first SWCD. The cost of Issue 4 seems to be a small price to pay to continue building on the dream that has benefited Highland County so much.

Thank You,

Don Roberts
