Wilmington wins first game of 2013 with 49-0 defeat of Hillsboro

The Wilmington Hurricane scored three first-quarter touchdowns and built a 29-0 halftime lead, as they defeated the Hillsboro Indians, 49-0, on Friday the 13th on the Wilmington College campus' Townsend Field at Williams Stadium.

The 'Cane's Austin Thompson took the opening kickoff to the 40; from there, Wilmington put together an eight-play, 60-yard scoring drive.

Junior Scott Garrett scored the game's first touchdown on a one-yard run with 8:22 to play in the opening period.

Hillsboro's Matt Arnold signaled for a fair catch inside the 20 on the ensuing kickoff. After two running plays produced no positive yardage, Indians quarterback Toby Warrington found Arnold for an 11-yard gain and a Hillsboro first down at its own 22. Three plays later, however, left the Tribe with a fourth and long and a punting situation for Jordan Mosley.

Chris McEvoy wasted no time in adding the second Hurricane TD on a long run with 4:57 on the clock. Ben Constant's PAT made it 14-0.

Avery Ventura returned the Wilmington kickoff to the Hillsboro 17, and once again the Indians' offense struggled against the Hurricane defense. After a three-and-out series, Mosley and the punt team were called again.

Wilmington quarterback Cody McCune threw an incomplete pass on first down, but Andy Fisher scampered for 15 yards to move the line of scrimmage to the Hillsboro 20. Jerry Johns was then stopped for a loss on a solid tackle by Jed Asmus and Garrett Baldridge for Hillsboro.

But with time winding down in the first quarter, Johns scored from three yards out and a 21-0 WHS lead.

Late in the second quarter, Wilmington QB Cody McCune connected with Adrian Young for a seven-yard scoring strike. The Hurricane's two-point conversion was good and the hosts held a 29-0 halftime advantage.

Following the break, Wilmington tacked on another 13 points in the third quarter for a 42-0 lead.

Dylan Robinson added a fourth-quarter TD to extend the margin to 49-0.

Unofficially, Wilmington rushed for 330 yards, to the Indians' 20.

Hillsboro falls to 0-3 with the loss. Wilmington improves to 1-2 on the season.

The Indians host Landmark Christian on Friday, Sept. 20.
