Week 2 Preview: McClain travels to Unioto; HHS hosts Goshen

McClain (1-0) at Unioto (0-1)
The McClain Tigers didn't disappoint last week, and this week they are taking to the road for the first of three consecutive weeks, traveling to Chillicothe to face the Unioto Shermans in non-league play.
McClain has already defeated one team from the Scioto Valley Conference in their season-opening 47-21 win over Adena. This week, the Tigers look to make it 2-0 when they take on a UHS team that is coming off a 33-20 loss to Vinton County.
In that game for the young Shermans, the 20 points came from two rushing scores by Nate Parker, who had two rushing TDs (42 yards total on 12 carries) and a TD pass from Erique Hosley to Nathan Sagraves. In their game against VC, the Shermans trailed 19-6.
UHS has just six seniors on the roster, as most of the team is sophomores. Another offensive player MHS needs to watch out for is senior Ryan Spencer.
"Unioto has a dynamic offense and a talented young quarterback," Closson
said.
MHS, in their season opener, controlled the second half as they outscored the Warriors, 29-6 in the final two quarters. They finished with 245 yards on the ground, led by Dillon Hunick with 82 yards and Ryan Faulconer with 73.
"I think our overall team depth helped with our second half run game," Closson said. "Also, the offensive line did a much better job getting off the ball low and maintaining contact, which opened up some nice running lanes."
After looking at the film, Closson spoke highly of the defense of the Shermans.
"Defensively, they play very aggressively and get to the ball quickly," Closson said. "We will have to play very well on both sides of the ball."
As previously mentioned, this is the first of three consecutive road game, with MHS starting the trip at UHS, followed by a game at Zane Trace and then starting their South Central Ohio League schedule with defending Division IV State champion Clinton-Massie.
But MHS is focused on this week, as Closson spoke of the Tiger faithful.
"We do play three straight road games, but they are relatively close," he said. "Tiger Nation always travels well to support our team."
MHS has was the past six meetings with Unioto, including a 31-12 win last season.

One of these teams will leave Richards Memorial Field Friday night with their first victory of the season, as both teams allowed over 40 points in their respective season openers one week ago.
On one hand, there are the Hillsboro Indians, who are coming off a 49-6 loss to Western Brown and looking for their first win in over a season. On the other side, the Warriors lost to Ross, 42-7, last week.
In their loss, GHS had just 54 yards passing and 77 yards rushing, with a team average of nearly three yards per carry.
"Their quarterback has a good arm," HHS head coach Matt Hodge said. "They run a spread offense and have a one kid (Jake Nelson) who runs the football hard. They also have tall, athletic receivers."
On the defensive side, the Warriors will run multiple fronts.
"They attack defensively," Hodge said. "They will punch you in the mouth."
As for the young HHS team, Hodge spoke about what he was pleased with in his first game at the helm of the Tribe.
The lone TD for HHS came off a short run by quarterback Toby Warrington in the second period.
"We didn't quit," Hodge said. "The effort was there. We have a lot to correct, but I want us to build off our positives.
"We have very little varsity experience, so we have to become more consistent. We are just trying to find the consistency."
