Tiger Sharks win quad-meet

GREENFIELD — The numbers game helped the McClain Tiger Sharks, and they took full advantage of the relay events, sending them to a quad-meet victory Wednesday evening over Wilmington, Clinton-Massie and cross-county rival Hillsboro.
For the boys events, McClain scored 131 points, followed by Wilmington (110), Hillsboro (66) and Clinton-Massie (17).
The Wilmington boys team had just five swimmers, with multiple swimmers on their team being previous state qualifiers.
The girls event saw Wilmington win with 209 points, followed in second place by McClain (124). Clinton-Massie was third (79), and in fourth was Hillsboro (44).
[[In-content Ad]]McClain won the 200-yard boys freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.21 as the team of Tommy Henry, Daniel Mottie, Adomas Fabin and Tommy Free combined for the time.
"It was a good meet for us," McClain boys coach Bradley George said. "We have a very young team, and we still need to continue to develop and get stronger.
"We'll build on this and continue to get ready for the SCOL meet in a few weeks."
The MHS boys totaled six second-place finishes, followed by five finishes in third place and five fourth-place finishes.
Free had two second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.17) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:09.58).
Henry finished in second place in the 100-yard freestyle (58.05). Ryan Page was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.68). The Tiger Sharks were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (Henry, Mottie, Fabin, Free) with a time of 4:00.97.
Ryan Wilkin was third in the 200-yard freestyle (3:00.02). Fabin was third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.62). Brandon Adams finished in third place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:22.25). MHS was also third in the 200-yard boys freestyle relay event with the team of Adams, Ethan Johnson, Bryan Riley and Storm Faulconer (2:03.48).
MHS (B-Team) was also third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (5:02.82).
For the HHS boys, Braden Wildey was first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.47) and the 100-yard freestyle (57.98).
Paul Burton was second place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:22.39). Todd Adkins was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.12). The HHS boys 200-yard freestyle relay team finished in second place with a time of 1:51.88. The team consists of Paul Burton, Adkins, Patrick Shanahan and Wildey.
Shanahan was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.97), and Adkins was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:24.02).
"We had a lot happen that was good for both our teams," Hillsboro boys and girls coach Joe Rhonemus said. "We don't have a lot of numbers, but we had some good swims from a few of our athletes.
"Braden (Wildey) had two personal bests."
As for the second-place McClain girls team, they had no individual or relay wins but totaled three second-place finishes and one third-place finish. MHS also had six fourth-place finishes.
Amber Sowders was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:33.77), and she was also second place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.98).
The MHS 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sowders, Megan McAdams, Alyssa Faulconer and Anna Ehlers (2:06.75) finished second.
The MHS 400-yard freestyle relay team of Mallory Simms, Maria Onusko, Kayla Mosley and Taylor Wheaton was third with a time of 4:54.99.
"I was very pleased with the girls," McClain girls coach Katie Dettwiller said. "This was the first meet since before Christmas, and I had girls swim their personal best in eight of 11 events. There really isn't a way to single swimmers out this meet because they all did well, and kudos to all of them.
"They have all been focusing on improving their technique and working on a little stuff, like their starts, turns and breathing. I'm glad the girls are continuing to drop their times. It's hard for a coach to push a swimmer if she's not seeing that work make a difference."
The HHS girls also had zero first-place or second-place finishes but totaled one third-place finish. The third-place finish came from Sydni Cox in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:18.00.
HHS totaled two fourth-place finishes.
"The girls had some decent swims," Rhonemus said. "Sydni did well, and we had a few strong swims.
"We are in the early stages of building a program, but I'm proud of the kids and how they competed."
