Strong 4th quarter leads Fayetteville over Hillsboro

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Lady Indians battled strong, but they were unable to stop and overcome Fayetteville basketball history, as not only did the Lady Rockets defeat the host Lady Indians, 74-54, but FHS senior Megan Eyre scored her 1,000th career point at HHS on Wednesday.
Eyre became the seventh player in FHS girls basketball history to achieve the scoring milestone, needing just eight points in the game to earn her 1,000th point. The senior achieved the feat with a 3-pointer from the left side of the court at the 6:25 mark of the third quarter to get to exactly 1,000 points for her career.
The 3-pointer put the Lady Rockets ahead, 40-31 as the game was stopped a few seconds later to honor Eyre with the game ball. Eyre ended the game with 15 points.
"Megan is just an outstanding all-around player," FHS head coach Toby Sheets said. "I'm happy for her, but she does so much for this team. She's not all about scoring. She's unselfish, and that's her biggest quality … being a team player.
"We usually assign her with the toughest defensive assignment, and to me, it is heartwarming to see her score the 1,000th point because she puts so much time and work into her game. She's a verbal leader and leads the team in almost every category, except scoring."
Besides the milestone moment for the Lady Rockets, for the first 28 minutes of the game, the Lady Indians played Fayetteville very tough, even leading after the first quarter by a 16-13 score.
In the first, HHS (1-2) took the lead for the first time at the 5:34 mark with a put-back bucket from junior Hannah Kibler and followed that with a jumper by Faith Middleton for a 6-3 lead.
Later in the first frame, Kaylynn Bell, who finished with 13 points, sank a 3-pointer for the Lady Indians for a 9-7 HHS advantage. After FHS tied the game at 9-9, HHS answered by taking a 16-9 advantage with 1:15 left on the clock with a jumper by Bell, a 3-pointer from Kirsten Juillerat and another two-point basket by Bell in a span of around one minute.
HHS lost the lead by halftime, trailing 33-27 with FHS taking back the lead with 5:38 left in the second off free throws from senior Makayla Rosselot for a 19-18 lead. Rosselot finished with a game-high 29 points.
The Lady Indians did fight back and took the lead back from the non-conference visitor with 2:33 left in the quarter off a layup by Juillerat. FHS answered quickly with a 3-pointer from Eyre and two free throws by Carly Burroughs for a 28-24 FHS advantage. Burroughs totaled 10 points.
Down six points with a minute to go in the first half, Trista Rhodes brought HHS to within four points of tying the score, but a 3-pointer from Rosselot and a free throw by Hillsboro's Madison Snyder left HHS trailing by six points at halftime.

Snyder led HHS with 16 points. She also tallied a double-double with 12 rebounds, her third double-double of the season.
"We had our opportunities to get a win in the second half, but we made some bad passes they converted into points, and that was it," HHS head coach J.R. Moberly said. "The girls played their hearts out, but toward the end of the game, we just ran out of gas."
HHS still trailed by six points after three quarters, but they never regained the lead in the second half. They got to within three points of tying the score with 26 seconds left in the quarter after a 7-0 run that consisted of a jumper by Kibler, a 3-pointer from Rhodes and a jumper by Middleton for a 47-44 score.
Rhodes finished with five points and led the team with five assists.
The quarter ended though with a 3-pointer by Eyre, her second of the game.
In the final eight minutes, FHS broke the game wide open as they did trail by three points with 6:29 left on the clock following a jumper from Kibler and a free throw by Bell for a 52-49 score. Kibler tallied nine points.
From that point on, the Lady Rockets outscored the hosts, 21-5.
HHS will play again on Saturday in a South Central Ohio League game when they travel to Chillicothe to face the Lady Cavaliers. The game time has been changed to an 11:30 a.m. JV start and 1 p.m. varsity start.
