Southeastern shoots their way past Hillsboro

The smooth shooting and quickness of the Southeastern Panthers caused the Hillsboro Indians a lot of trouble in the first half, causing the host Indians to play catch-up the entire game, leading to a 70-51 loss for the hosts at the Hillsboro Holiday Shootout.
HHS did lead once in the game, a 7-6 lead during the first quarter following a layup by Alex Van Zant with 3:47 left in the clock. From there, though, the Indians never led for the remainder of the non-league contest.
"We knew coming in they were talented offensively," HHS head coach Brett Prince said. "It comes down to the first half. We were running and chasing shooters and not playing physical.
"They drew help in the post, and they would kick the ball out to a wide-open player … and they didn't miss much."
Hillsboro (3-5) was led in scoring by Jordan Captain with a game-high 27 points, most coming in the final 16 minutes of play, but in the first half, the Indians just struggled to score, as they trailed 18-9 after the first quarter and 36-17 at halftime.
Of the nine points for HHS in the first quarter, four were scored by Latrell Haithcock and three were from Captain. Also adding points was Van Zant, as they were the two points that put HHS in the lead for the only time in the game.
The second saw HHS be outscored by 10 points at 18-8 with Austin Bagshaw, Van Zant and Captain combining for the second-quarter scoring for HHS.

Turnovers also hurt the Indians, especially in the first half, as they finished the first two quarters with at least 10.
SE was led in scoring by Jordan Allen with 19 points, scoring 11 of his points in the first half. Taylor Crabtree followed with 15 points overall, and Dylan Miles added 12 points.
The overall play for HHS was better in the second half, as they put together a post game that featured Captain dominating the third quarter with nine points. He added 13 more points in the fourth, as he went 5-of-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth frame.
For the game, Captain was 7-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Zach Young and Van Zant each finished the game with six points, while Bagshaw and Haithcock totaled four points apiece overall. Jacob Aber finished with three points, and R.J. Collard scored one point as he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
HHS outscored SE in the fourth, 21-16.
"We changed things up in the second half," Prince said. "We went to one post player and four guards, and it worked, but unfortunately, we were playing down 18 to 19 points, and we just traded shots with them in the second half. We can't play like that and expect to win games."
HHS will play again Saturday in day two of their Holiday Shootout when they host the Zane Trace Pioneers at 8 p.m.
