Rotary Bowl remains in Greenfield; Tigers KO Indians

GREENFIELD — For the second consecutive year, the Rotary Bowl trophy will reside at McClain High School.
The Tigers controlled all aspects of the 28th edition of the Rotary Bowl game, and for that, they dominated the scoreboard, defeating their cross-county rival Hillsboro, 53-14 at McClain Field Friday night to wrap up the 2013 season.
McClain finishes the season at 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the South Central Ohio League, while the Indians end the year at 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the SCOL. In the Tigers' two consecutive Rotary Bowl wins, they have outscored the Indians, 107-20.
As for this Week 10 matchup, MHS collected 486 yards offensively, while the Indians finished with 217 yards of offense.
"We're really happy for our seniors," MHS head coach Randy Closson said. "It was a big night for them, and having Thomas (Schrader) back in the lineup at quarterback really helped out.
"The team played well, and it was a good win."
[[In-content Ad]]Though it was the Tigers who controlled 90 percent of the game, the Indians were first to score. HHS began the game with a six-play, 52-yard scoring drive that ended with Jordan Mosley rushing 26 yards to pay dirt and six points for 9:13 left in the opening quarter. The PAT was blocked by MHS for a 6-0 Indians advantage. Mosley finished with 79 yards rushing on 13 carries.
That drive was set up with a 16-yard reception from Ryan Hagen off a pass by Logan Lesley. Lesley finished 9-of-16 for 83 yards passing, and he also had 12 yards rushing for the game. Hagen ended the game with two receptions for 24 yards.
The Tigers responded with a touchdown on their first drive of the game, totaling 61 yards on four plays.
MHS began their first drive with a 6-yard run from Ryan Faulconer, followed with a 39-yard run from the junior. Faulconer then added an 8-yard scamper, getting the Tigers to the HHS 7-yard line. Faulconer finished with 113 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Thomas Schrader took over from there, reaching the end zone for a 7-yard score in his final high school game with 7:39 left in the opening quarter. Faulconer's PAT gave MHS a 7-6 lead which they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Schrader rushed for 52 yards on seven attempts and was 5-of-8 passing for 171 yards and three touchdowns.
McClain's defense got their offense the ball back two plays later with a fumble recovery by Logan Rhonemus at the 6:44 mark of the first.
The Tigers didn't disappoint their home crowd, this time compiling a 7-play, 37-yard drive that saw Shawn Haddox leap over a player from HHS, catching the ball in mid-air and landing in the end zone for a touchdown with 3:17 left in the first. Faulconer converted another PAT for a 14-6 advantage.
Haddox totaled two receptions for 48 yards. Also catching a pass from Schrader was Chris Sellman for 10 yards.
With 11:02 left in the second quarter, the Tigers went ahead by a 21-6 advantage following a 6-yard power run through the HHS defense for the third MHS score of the game. He also kicked his third PAT for the 15-point lead.
McClain went 4-for-4 as they scored on their fourth possession of the game, putting together a five-play, 45-yard drive which began with an 18-yard run by Dillon Hunick (15 carries for 85 yards) and ended with Schrader racing for 13 yards and the score with 6:05 left in the second quarter for a 27-6 advantage.
Faulconer was also a standout on defense, as he intercepted a Lesley pass with 3:44 left in the opening half.
The 3:44 was more than enough time left on the clock, with MHS taking just one play to add to their lead when Alex Hollar caught a short pass from Schrader, then took the ball 92 yards to the end zone, outrunning every player on the field for what turned into a 34-6 lead following the PAT by Faulconer. Hollar totaled two receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
The Tigers scored a touchdown on their first five possessions of the first half.
"This was a great group effort," Closson said. "We had guys step up, including Josh Todd and Dylan Wheaton, and it was a good thing to see those two step up the way they did.
"Again, this was a good win for our school, the players and the community."

The touchdown occurred with Lesley finding Michael Arnold for 11 yards and the touchdown with 11:05 left in the quarter. Arnold totaled four receptions for 39 yards.
Lesley ran the ball into the end zone for a two-point conversion, with MHS still leading 34-14.
Just like in the first quarter, MHS responded to an Indian score with one of their own when Faulconer bruised his way to pay dirt on a 1-yard run with 7:42 left in the third.
The score later went to 47-14 in the third as Hollar took the ball 20 yards off a pass by Schrader with 2:29 left in the third.
Hollar also scored the game's final touchdown, waiting for his blocks to create room and maneuvering his way past the Indians' defense for six points, leaving 7:24 in the fourth quarter for the eventual 53-14 final score.
