McClain wins in 4 games; sweeps regular season over HHS

GREENFIELD — In a match which was played as McClain's "Claws for the Cause" for cancer research, the Lady Tigers battled with cross-county rival Hillsboro, eventually winning in four games Thursday.
The victory at MHS was the second time this season the Lady Tigers defeated Hillsboro in South Central Ohio League play, as this time MHS won by scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-17 in games two, three and four. Hillsboro won the first game by a 25-22 score.
"This was a good win. Hillsboro made some runs, but we were able to overcome them at the end," MHS coach Emma Gall said. "We started off slow, and it took us a while to get started, but the girls played well.
"It was a good win in the league and is big for us headed into next week."
In the first game, which was won by HHS, the score was tied six times, with the final time being at 20-20. HHS tied the score early on at 6-6 with a spike and point from Cailin Wehrung, but a few moments later, following MHS tying the score, Hillsboro's Taylor Remsing tied the score at 9-9 on a block at the front of the net.
MHS eventually rallied for a 19-18 advantage with service points from Abby Storts. Remsing brought HHS to another tied score with consecutive points scored off spikes, and from there HHS didn't trail for the remainder of the game as Wehrung put HHS ahead by three with a powerful hit to the MHS side of the court.
The game-winning point was scored by Madison Snyder with a block for the 25-22 win.
"We can pass, hit and serve, but we lost our intensity," HHS coach Amy Vance said. "We need to keep our intensity up for the entire match, and we don't.
"We have improved throughout the season, but like I've said before, our overall record doesn't show that improvement."
McClain owned the final result for the next three games, but it wasn't easy, as they won the next three games by a combined 15 points.
Game two between the two Highland County rivals started off strong for HHS as they led 3-0 with points from Savannah Cameron, Bailey Patton and Snyder. Later, MHS tied the score at 4-4 with a block by Storts and a service point from Katy Unger.
As the second game continued, a variety of points were scored by McClain from Storts off serves, along with a block for a 10-6 lead. HHS rallied for a 10-10 tie with points scored by Wehrung and Emma Reno, along with two points coming off MHS hitting their own side of the net.

Later in game two, Reno tied the score at 15, and HHS then took a 17-15 advantage with an ace from Cameron.
MHS rallied late in the second game with Allie Orr-Zody, Storts and Unger for a 21-21 tie. Unger eventually put MHS ahead with points off a serve, but again, HHS was there to make it a one-point score as Megan Overberg scored a point on two occasions, lastly at 24-23. HHS hit their own side of the net to end the second game, putting MHS ahead by two points giving them the game win.
Game three started out strong for MHS, as they took a 7-0 lead, including aces from Alli Willett.
HHS got a little closer with an ace from Whitlee Price, getting to within five points of tying the score, and eventually HHS had points with blocks from Snyder, a service point Overberg and Patton pushed the ball over the net to cut the score to a 12-8 deficit to the Lady Tigers.
Later, the score became 14-12 with a spike by Overberg, but MHS later built a five-point advantage with help from Unger. The game three score was never tied for the remainder of the game with another ace from Unger, along with Orr-Zody scoring McClain's 24th point off an ace and MHS winning the game with a power hit over the net by Unger.
The fourth and final game of the evening saw the score tied just once as it was the largest win of any game, with MHS winning by eight points.
MHS trailed just once at 1-0, and from there the score was tied at 1-1, and MHS eventually led by a 9-1 score.
Unger contributed a lot of points with her serving, including a couple aces as MHS eventually led by an 18-6 score.
There were a lot of tough points scored by both teams in the match, as McClain's McKenzie Figgins had a few digs at libero that kept points alive for the Lady Tigers.
MHS eventually won the game and match as HHS bounced the ball off their side of the net for the final point of the match.
