McClain Lady Tigers win at Hillsboro

HILLSBORO — The McClain Lady Tigers earned their third win of the season Saturday evening by going on the road and defeating the host Hillsboro Lady Indians 45-31 in a game where MHS led at the end of the final three quarters.
Though McClain gained the Frontier Athletic Conference victory, they trailed at the end of the first frame by a 10-6 score, as HHS was the first team to put points on the scoreboard with a basket by Addyson Miles and free throw from Blake Herdman for the 3-0 lead with 5:23 left in the first frame.
McClain got on the board with two points off a bucket from Payton Pryor, who eventually led all scorers with 22 points in the road conference victory, as she made four two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and she was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line for the game.
From there for HHS, they added points with two made free throws from Kobie Miles, and Pryor cut the lead to a point once again with two converted free throws of her own for a 5-4 score with 3:13 left in the quarter.
Hillsboro built a five-point lead with a layup from Peighton Bledsoe and two points by Kobie Miles. The quarter ended with Luca Matesic scoring two points following a rebound and Hillsboro’s Herdman sinking a free throw for a 10-6 Lady Indians lead.
McClain outscored Hillsboro, 11-2 in the second frame, as they led 17-12 at halftime. MHS struck first in the second with 4:11 left on the clock with a 3-pointer from Kaitlyn Jett, as these were the the first points scored by either team in the second frame. MHS took the lead with 3:53 left in the first half following a 3-pointer by Pryor.
The Lady Tigers added to their lead with a free throw by Lillie Saunders and two made free throws by Lily Barnes for a 15-10 advantage with 2:06 on the second-quarter clock.
HHS scored their only points of the quarter with two points in the paint from Herdman, and Pryor ended the scoring in the second quarter with a basket.
Hillsboro won the third frame at 9-5 and took the lead for a couple minutes following a 3-pointer from Herdman at the 5:30 mark by a 21-20 score. MHS regained the lead with 3:57 left in the quarter with two made free throws by Jett, leaving McClain ahead by a 22-21 score after three frames.
The Lady Tigers dominated the fourth frame, taking the quarter 23-10 and the game by 14 points with the 45-31 final score.
“It feels good to get this win after having two days of doing nothing,” MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. “We weren’t allowed to be with the kids due to sickness, and I felt they showed a lot of grit. We didn’t get off to the best of starts, but we weathered that storm, and in the fourth quarter we finished the deal, and that’s what good teams do against their rival.”
MHS had 17 of their points come from the free-throw line in the fourth, as they were 17-of-25 from the stripe in the final frame. The fourth quarter for McClain saw Pryor score 14 points, as she connected with two two-point baskets and she was 10-of-12 from the free-throw line in the fourth frame.
Barnes scored six points in the fourth, finishing the game with 11 points, while the final quarter also had Jett with two made free throws and one point by Saunders.
Hillsboro’s fourth frame saw Kyra Boyd scored four points, while Bledsoe and Kobie Miles each had two points, and teammates Addyson Miles and Herdman each scored one point.
The Lady Tigers for the game were 24-of-33 from the free-throw line, while Hillsboro went 8-of-17.
“Hats off to my kids,” Haines said. “Payton Pryor had her best offensive performance of the year. She just came out, put us on her shoulders and made free throws. That was the story … our kids down the stretch making free throws. That really let us build the lead.”
Other final scoring totals for McClain included Saunders (two), Matesic (three) and Jett (seven). Herdman led HHS with 12 points, and she was followed by Bledsoe (six), Addyson Miles (five), Kobie Miles (four) and Boyd (four).
McClain moves to 2-3 in the FAC and 3-5 overall following the win. HHS falls to 0-5 in the FAC and 2-9 overall.
Next for MHS is a game against county rival Lynchburg-Clay at home on Dec. 21. Hillsboro plays again Dec. 21 at home against Adena.
