McClain, Hillsboro girls soccer teams play to a 2-2 tie

Whenever McClain and Hillsboro play, no matter the sport, it’s always very competitive and hard-fought to the end, and the girls soccer match in Greenfield between these two Frontier Athletic Conference rivals and county rivals did not disappoint.
After two periods or 90 minutes of good clean competitive excitement, McClain and Hillsboro battled to a 2-2 tie Thursday.
The first half ended with neither team scoring because of some great defensive play by both teams. McClain’s goalkeeper Kenzi Wise made several impressive stops within just a few feet of the net.
The second half was still a defensive struggle most of the time, but both teams scored two goals and had several chances to win at the end.
Hillsboro’s Hannah Holland gave the Lady Indians their first goal of the game early in the second period, but McClain’s Luca Matesic answered at the 13:08 mark to knot the score at 1-1.
Senior Payton Pryor gave the Lady Tigers the lead at 2-1 at the 10:00 mark on an unassisted goal.
The Lady Indians then drew even with just 8:14 remaining in the match when Taylor Leathley scored on a nice shot in front of the goal.
Both teams had several opportunities to score at the end but just couldn’t put the ball in the net, and the game ended in the 2-2 tie.
“I thought we came out flat to start the game, which was a little surprising with it being our seniors’ last home game,” said McClain head coach Tyler Carman. “We were lucky to be tied 0-0 at the half after coach (Blain) Bergstrom and I challenged our girls at halftime to step it up a little bit and settle down. Our girls responded and played a lot better in the second half.
“After getting behind early in the second half, we came back strong and got a pair of goals from Luca (Matesic) and Payton (Pryor) and took the 2-1 lead,” Carman continued. “But then I thought we got a little lazy in our back row, and they were able to score late and tie the game.
“We have never beaten Hillsboro, and both games this year have ended in ties, so this was a game that we really wanted to win. Both games we had leads but gave them away, and that is really frustrating.
“I did like the way we battled back today and then held on for the tie, and now we’ve got to move on and get ready for our final three games of the season heading into the tournament.”
The Lady Tigers defeated Southeastern Saturday in Chillicothe with a 5-0 shutout.
McClain will next play at Fairfield on Monday, then travel to Westfall Wednesday for the regular-season finale. The Lady Tigers open up tournament play on Thursday, Oct. 20 when they travel to Circleville for a 6 p.m. start time.
Hillsboro is set to face Logan Elm in an away game to start sectional play on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.
