McClain defeats Hillsboro in SCOL dual

Though it was a tri-match, it was also a South Central Ohio League dual where for the first time in school history, the McClain Tigers defeated the Hillsboro Indians, 45-27 for the league win.
"This was a great win for our program, being the first time we defeated Hillsboro in an SCOL dual," McClain coach Shane Paul said. "This is a big step for our program."
One of the matches that Paul said made a difference was the 152-pound match where McClain's Jake Badgley defeated Hillsboro's Curran Butler via pin fall at the 4:05 mark of the match.
The match was tough for both wrestlers as Butler held the advantage on more than one occasion in the match, but Badgley was able to maneuver around to get on top of his opponent to gain the win via pin.
"We fought off our backs in several matches, especially in the 152-pound match where Jake battled off his back three times. That win was huge for us, as it was a 12-point swing."
The win by Badgley put MHS ahead 12-9, but a forfeit at 160 pounds to Hillsboro two-time state qualifier Kordell Ford put HHS back in the lead at 15-12.
Then came another competitive match at 170 pounds with Ethan Paul of the Tigers defeating Jed Asmus via pin fall at the 2:55 mark of the match to bring the visiting Tigers ahead 18-15.
From there, the Tigers never trailed for the remainder of the match with Lucas Unger (182 pounds) winning for MHS via decision over Hillsboro's Austin Miller to put the Tigers in front at 21-15. From there, Kaleb Smith (195), Jarrett Milnes (220) and Dylan Trefz (285) all won their matches via forfeit.

In other matches in the Hillsboro-McClain dual, Kylee Stroud (106) won for MHS via forfeit, while Matt West of Hillsboro won with an injury forfeit over McClain's Conner Moriarty at 113 pounds. An ambulance had to be called for the injury as Moriarty landed at an awkward position while falling to the mat.
The 120-pound match was a double forfeit, and Ryan Kelley (126 pounds) won his match via forfeit.
Hillsboro's Toby Warrington (132 pounds) won the opening match of the cross-county rivalry by pin fall at 1:21 over McClain's Charlie Davis.
At 138 pounds, Hillsboro's Cody Whaley won via decision over Jason Flowers of MHS.
Former state qualifier Dillon Hunick of MHS won by pin fall at the 4:05 mark of his match against Lane Hester at 145 pounds.
The Tigers won their non-league match against Paint Valley by a 45-32 score.
Winning via forfeits for the Tigers were: Stroud (106), Smith (126), Dillon Faulconer (145), Hunick (152) and Paul (170).
Unger won with a pin fall at the 5:15 mark of his 182-pound match over Johnson of PV. Trefz (285) won with a pin fall over May in 56 seconds.
In Hillsboro's match against the Bearcats of Paint Valley, the Indians won by a 41-24 score.
For the Indians, Warrington began things by winning with a forfeit at 126 pounds, followed by Whaley winning via a 14-8 decision at 132 pounds.
Hester put the Indians ahead 12-3 with a 9-3 decision at 138 pounds, followed by a double forfeit at 145 pounds. Butler gained a win at 152 pounds via forfeit, moving the Indians ahead, 18-3.
Ford (160 pounds) won his match with a tech fall (17-0), as the Indians went ahead 23-3 and Asmus (170 pounds) won with a forfeit as the Indians jumped to a 29-3 lead over PV.
PV came back with a win by Jackson at 182 by a 10-8 decision over Miller, while Mark Clifford of PV won with a forfeit at 195 pounds. Davis (220) and May (285) of PV each won via forfeit, tying the score at 24.
