Lady Indians, Thoroman win at Highland County Cross-Country Invitational

The Hillsboro Indians traveled to Whiteoak to participate in the Highland County Cross-Country Invitational on Sept. 27, where the Lady Indians earned a team win as well as an individual victory by Taylor Thoroman.
The men’s team was led by the talented trio of Corbin Winkle, Christopher Sowders and Jacob Seaman. Both Winkle and Sowders finished the race with PRs. Winkle came in second place with a run of 17:12, while Sowders finished in fifth place at 18:36.
Coach Ed Letts was pleased with the performance of his sophomore athletes.
“I was very pleased with our results today,” Letts said. “Corbin ran a solid race, and I'm looking forward to having him in a larger race where there will be more people to push him. Chris also ran a personal best, and I expect him to continue to improve as we progress toward league and districts.”
The final runner to cross the finish line for the Indians was Jacob Seaman. Seaman, just a freshman, completed the course in 21:31, good for 20th place.
“Jacob had a tough day,” said Letts. “But he has been working hard and will play a major role for us if we hope to advance to the regional meet in late October.”
The Lady Indians also turned in impressive performances. In addition to winning the team race, five ladies achieved PRs on the fast course.
Once again, the team was led by two freshmen, Taylor Thoroman and Jailyn Williams. Thoroman, who won the race, turned in a career-best time of 20:12. Williams came in second place, with her own PR at 21:45.
About a minute later, another pack of Lady Indians crossed the line. Finishing fifth, Brooklyn Lucarello ran a 22:50. Just behind her were Brooklynn Minton and Abbey Letts. Minton, a senior, came in sixth place at 23:09, while Letts crossed the line at 23:13, good for seventh place.
A few places later, senior Emily Letts finished the course in 11th place by running a 25:30.
“It was great to see so many PRs be achieved today,” said Coach Rob Snavely. “Taylor, Jailyn, Brooklyn, Brooklynn and Abbey all ran the fastest races of their careers today. They are running very competitively right now. They’re not only competing with other schools’ runners, but with each other too.
“I hate singling out only one individual, but I have to mention how well Brooklyn Lucarello ran today. She took off over one minute from her PR. That was incredible, and I couldn’t be happier for her.”
The Indians will compete in the Blue Lion Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the YMCA in Washington Court House.
