Lady Indians rally for 3-set win over McClain

GREENFIELD — Down by as many as seven points in the third set, the Hillsboro Lady Indians were able to rally and battle back for a three-set South Central Ohio League victory Monday over Highland County rival McClain.
This was the second time this season the Lady Indians (7-11) won in three sets over McClain as they won earlier in the season at HHS in three sets vs. MHS.
On Monday, HHS won by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 26-24.
"I'm pleased … very pleased with how the girls played (Monday)," HHS coach Nichole Dickey said. "We went to sleep in the third set but came back to get the win.
"We've been struggling to play as a team, but (Monday) we played much better. We played with chemistry."
The set which decided the outcome was set three, as early on, it was tied at 3-3 and 5-5 with Hillsboro's Heather Tipton tying the score at five with a spike. After two out of play hits by HHS, an ace from McClain's Katy Unger put MHS ahead 8-5. Later, an ace by Allie Orr-Zody and a play at the top of the net by Kelcey Smith resulted in an MHS lead of 13-7.[[In-content Ad]]
Megan Overberg (HHS) brought HHS closer at 13-10, but points from Smith, Abby Storts and Lori Shonkwiler extended the Lady Tigers' lead to 17-10.
HHS began their rally with points from Kirsten Juillerat, Tipton and aces from Casey Dunham, which brought HHS to within one point of a tied score at 19-18.
Again, MHS added to their lead with a 23-20 score following points at the net by Makenzie Olaker, but HHS was there to bring the score closer as Megan Overberg and Tipton, again, made it a two-point differential at 22-20.
McClain was one point from winning the set at 24-21, but Hillsboro's Autumn Hacker and Thornberg, followed with an ace by Tipton tied the score at 24-24. HHS scored again then a hit by Hacker gave HHS the set and match at 26-24.
"We played better (Monday) than what we have been, but again … the intensity and aggressiveness isn't there," MHS coach Emma Gall said. "We need to find a way to get the intensity out on the court."
In the first set, the score was tied at 1-1, 9-9, 10-10 and 13-13, but from there, the first set belonged to HHS with Juillerat, Hacker and serves by Overberg pushing the score to 25 for HHS. Also helping contribute to the points scored with her back row hitting was Cailin Wehrung, along with setting from Lily Marshall.
In set two, the score was tied five times, lastly at 10-10. From there, HHS outscored MHS 15-5 with Tipton gaining the final point of the set for an HHS win in set two.
In JV play, HHS won 2-1, winning sets two and three.
McClain will host their Volley for the Cure event on Tuesday as they host the Fairfield Lady Lions in a non-league game. HHS will play again on Wednesday as they host London.
