Hillsboro’s high school cross-country teams traveled to Georgetown on Sept. 10 and ran at the Vern Hawkins Georgetown Invitational. The Indians placed third out of ten teams, while the Lady Indians won the event, placing first out of five teams.
The Lady Indians kicked off the high school races with a stellar team effort. As has been the case so far this season, Taylor Thoroman led the Lady Indians on the course. Thoroman finished second in the race with a time of 21:17.
Also continuing trends for much of the young season, Hillsboro’s team depth came through and gave the Indians just enough points to win. Jailyn Williams ran a 23:44 (10th place), and Bree Bailey finished in 24:06 (13th place), just ahead of teammate, Abbey Letts, who raced to a 24:07 finish for 14th place.
Less than a minute later, Brooklynn Minton placed 17th with a run of 25:01. Teammates Brooklyn Lucarello and Allison Browning finished 26:28 and 26:35, good for 24th and 25th places, respectively.
The final two Lady Indians to finish the race were Emily Letts and Kora Greene. Letts completed the course in 29:14 (34th place), and Greene ran a 41:58, good for 51st place.
“Bree and Abbey had a great race right at the end,” said Coach Rob Snavely. “They both ran well. Bree got her this time, but Abbey is young and continues to get faster and better. I am excited to see where she is at by the end of the year.
“I also need mention the leadership of Emily Letts and Brooklynn Minton. They lead in practice, meets and everything we do. You don’t win first place on talent alone. You need leaders who work hard, keep the team together and show the younger runners what dedication and hard work is.”
The final race of the day saw the men’s team take the course. Passing several runners in the final stretch of the race, Corbin Winkle finished third for the Indians with a run of 18:22.
Finishing with a 19:51 was Hillsboro’s second-fastest runner on the day, Ryan Howland.
Speaking about Howland’s 13th-place finish, Coach Ed Letts remarked, “Freshman Ryan Howland ran really well today, and I’m looking forward to see if he can continue developing as the season progresses.”
Teammate Chris Sowders came in seconds behind Howland at 19:57, good for 14th place.
As with the previously mentioned ladies race, there was a race to the finish line by two Indian runners. Jacob Seaman (25th place) and Cooper Swope (26th place) sprinted toward the finish line in a near-photo finish. Seaman crossed the line at 21:05.5, with Swope a mere .1 second behind.
Senior Nick Turner finished in 34th place at 22:02, and Dylan Bender rounded out the team effort with a 24:43, good for 58th place.
“I was pleased with our performance today,” Coach Letts said. “Our team average was three minutes faster this year than it was last year. We had a lot of young runners step up and compete quite well.”
