Lady Indians are sectional champs; move on to district round

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Lady Indians are moving to the district round of the 2013 Division II SE District tournament by holding on and defeating the Unioto Lady Shermans, 3-2 Thursday in the season finale at Richards Memorial Field.
The Lady Indians (12-2-2) overall were a bit slow with their scoring out of the gate as they and the No. 8 seeded Lady Shermans each had one goal following the first 40 minutes, though UHS didn't play like a team that was ranked as the eighth seed.
"Unioto is better than an eight seed," HHS coach Leslie Molen said. "This was a good game for us to get started on since our last game was a week ago.
"We started off a little shaky. We knew we had two of their players to look out for, but for the most part the girls came through."
HHS was first to break the scoreless tie in the match at the 11:51 mark of the first half when Kaylee Achor kicked the ball to the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Achor was assisted by Mallory Sluss.
UHS tied the score at 1-1 with a goal at the 1:12 mark of the first half, also to the left side of the goal.
Within the opening 10 minutes of the second half, it was UHS who took the lead for the first time in the match as they took a 2-1 lead with 31:13 left in regulation following a goal near the net.

HHS followed with what they thought was the game-tying goal with 20:03 left in the second half, but it was called off by the officials due to an offsides call.
That didn't matter for the Lady Indians as they made up for the miscue when Trista Rhodes scored a goal in a one-on-one matchup with the keeper of UHS, placing the ball to the left of the keeper, tying the score at 2-2 with 18:11 remaining on the scoreboard.
It didn't take long for the Lady Indians to move into the lead for good when Achor put HHS ahead with a goal near the net at the 16:54 mark of the second half.
"Kaylee had two scrappy goals, and Trista came through as well," Molen said. "I can't complain, because the kids finished well."
Both teams continued to pressure, with the UHS offense pressuring the Lady Indians' defense but to no avail as keeper Rachel Sexton made a couple of diving saves with a final one coming at 1:52 on the clock.
"Our defense played well," Molen said. "The big thing at the end was we wanted to keep possession at the top."
Sexton finished the match with six saves.
HHS will play in the district semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. when they face No. 5 seeded Circleville at Jackson High School. Circleville defeated the Zane Trace Lady Pioneers, 2-0 in their sectional final.
