Indians start season with one-point loss to Wilmington

HILLSBORO – It wasn’t the result the Hillsboro Indians wanted to have at the start of their 2021-22 season, but the new season began with a one-point loss to the Wilmington Hurricane on their home court.
The Indians (0-1) led at halftime by one point, had a tough third frame where the momentum went the way of their opponent, and they battled back to make the score close in the final frame, but time ran out and Hillsboro fell to Wilmington by a 46-45 score in their non-conference opener.
Last season, the Indians defeated the ’Cane for the first time in two decades, but this year scoring was scarce in the first half between the two varsity teams, where the Indians led 8-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter and 23-22 at halftime.
The first points of the game weren’t scored until the clock read 7:06 where Kellen Baltazar scored the first points of the game for the visitors, but HHS answered a couple minutes later with a bucket from Bryce Parsons for the 2-2 score.
Wilmington came back with the next basket, a jumper by Colin Barker, only to see the Indians score the next six points with Canaan Griffith scoring a two-point basket, a 3-pointer by Hunter Price and a free throw made by Quintin Captain, putting the Indians ahead 8-4.
WHS scored the final three points of the first half, making the score 8-7. Another part of the first that was a difference maker in the frame was Hillsboro was called for three charges.
The Indians opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer by Ethan Parry, only to see the ’Cane score two points, plus draw a fourth charge call on HHS in the first half.
HHS overcame the foul call with 3-pointers by Price and Bentley Watson for a 17-9 lead, while forcing Wilmington to call a timeout.
After the timeout, WHS went on an 8-0 run, cutting the Indians’ lead to one point at 17-16 with 3:42 left in the second quarter. HHS added to their advantage with a layup by Watson, and later in the frame HHS took a 21-18 lead with two free throws by Watson as well.
The final moment of the first half included four points from Wilmington’s Shane Griffith, and two points by Hillsboro’s Captain from two converted free throws, leaving the halftime lead at 23-22.
The shooting and defense of the Indians was cold in the third quarter, with the ’Cane outscoring the Tribe, 15-5 in the eight-minute frame. HHS in the third had a 3-pointer by Captain and a rebound and layup on a put-back by Parsons.
Wilmington scored the first four points of the third for a 27-23 lead, and HHS eventually regained the lead with 6:13 on the clock with the five combined points by Captain and Parsons. WHS answered with a 10-0 run to end the frame with 3-pointers by Griffith and Barker for a 37-28 lead.
HHS battled strongly in the fourth, chipping away at the lead of WHS, with Captain starting the third with a 3-pointer.
After seven consecutive points by the ’Cane, Captain kept the Indians in the game with a three-point play by Captain, and later he made two free-throws, bringing HHS to within eight points of Wilmington’s lead of 44-36.
HHS had another scoring run with this one starting with a free throw from Price, followed by two made free throws from Captain. Parry’s defense stood out late in the game with a steal and fast break, cutting the ’Cane lead to five points with 1:58 left in the third quarter.
HHS continued the fourth quarter with a layup in between two defenders by Captain, and two points in the paint from Price, for what became the one-point deficit. HHS outscored Wilmington, 17-9 in the final eight minutes.
Leading the way for HHS was Captain with 18 points, as he totaled 12 points in the fourth quarter. Price totaled nine points for the Indians, and Watson totaled seven points.
Other final scoring for the Indians included five points for Parry, Griffith with two points and Parsons with four points.
Next for the Indians is a home game on Friday, Dec. 3 in Frontier Athletic Conference action against the Miami Trace Panthers.
