Indians play close in loss to Washington

HILLSBORO — In a closely played game from start to finish, Frontier Athletic Conference foes Hillsboro and Washington battled until the final buzzer sounded, but unfortunately for the host Indians, they were unable to gain the win as they fell in the FAC contest to the visiting Blue Lions, 58-53, Tuesday night.
The Indians trailed the Blue Lions, 13-10 at the conclusion of the first frame, though it was the Indians who built a 5-0 lead to start the game with a layup by Bryce Parsons and a 3-pointer from Nic Burns with 6:11 left in the opening frame.
Parsons finished the game leading the Indians in scoring with 15 points, while Burns totaled seven points overall.
Eventually, the Indians built an 8-3 lead with a three-point play by Deegan Bloomfield, but the Blue Lions scored the next six points to gain the lead at 9-8 with 3:54 left on the clock. Bloomfield finished the game with 14 points.
HHS answered with a basket by Parsons, but Washington’s Isaiah Haithcock and John Wall scored the final four points of the opening quarter to put the Blue Lions ahead 13-10.
After trailing in the early stages of the second quarter, the Indians regained the lead with 6:11 left in the first half as Burns sank a two-point basket, and Parsons had a put-back in the paint for an 18-15 lead with 5:15 on the second-quarter clock.
HHS added to their lead with a 3-pointer from Bloomfield at the 3:37 mark, but the Blue Lions answered with a basket by Wall for a HHS lead of 21-19 with 3:25 left remaining in the opening half.
The Indians took a four-point lead with made free throws by Tate Davis, and that lead moved to six points with two more points by Bloomfield, this time with an underhand basket. Washington eventually took a one-point lead when halftime arrived by scoring nine of the next 11 points for a 28-27 lead, as Brayden May had a 3-pointer, Tanner Lemaster connected with a three-point play and Wall sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Washington held a 43-40 lead after three frames as they kept the lead for the entire quarter with Lemaster scoring eight points in the quarter for WCH, while Haithcock had six points in the third and May sank a free throw with the Blue Lions outscoring Hillsboro, 15-13 in the quarter.
HHS had five points by Davis in the third as three of his points came from beyond the arc, while Dorian Stewart sank two buckets, Parsons made one basket and Steven Kibler went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line in the quarter.
Washington scored 15 points again in the fourth quarter as they kept possession of the lead, even with HHS getting as close as one point from tying the game on with just under 4:00 left in regulation.
For the Indians in the fourth quarter, a frame where they scored 13 points for a second consecutive quarter, they saw Parsons score five points and Bloomfield add four points, while Davis and Kibler each made two free throws.
Washington had six points by Lemaster, four points from both Wall and Haithcock and one point by Raleigh Haithcock in the final frame.
As a team, the Blue Lions were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line, and the Indians were 12-of-15.
Other final totals in the scoring column for the Indians included Burns (seven), Davis (nine), Kibler (four) and Stewart (four), while Washington was led by Lemaster with 17 points, and his Blue Lion teammates Wall and Isaiah Haithcock each scored 16 points.
Washington’s other scoring totals included Michael Bearden (four), May (four) and Raleigh Haithcock (one).
The loss drops HHS to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the FAC. Washington improves to 8-1 and 4-0 in the FAC.
