Indians lose on road against FAC foe Blue Lions

WASHINGTON C.H. — It just wasn’t a good night for the Hillsboro Indians on the gridiron, as they lost their Frontier Athletic Conference opener to a very strong and athletic Washington Blue Lions team by a 42-0 score Friday night in Week 6 at Gardner Park.
Not a lot went in favor of the Indians against their conference counterpart, as the Indians were held to 169 offensive yards by the Blue Lions defense on Washington’s homecoming game. As for the Blue Lions’ offense, they totaled 277 yards as a team.
At halftime, Washington built a 29-0 lead, as HHS had opportunities to score a late touchdown in the second quarter at the goal line, but were unable to convert on a run and a pass from the 8-yard line, as time expired in the first half.
Washington struck first with 9:58 left in the first quarter where quarterback Troy Thompson completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to AJ Dallmayer. The PAT by RJ Foose left Washington in front by a 7-0 lead. Also in the first half, Dallmayer became Washington’s all-time receiving yardage leader.
The second Blue Lions score came with 9:34 left in the second quarter when Thompson passed to Lemaster for a 20-yard touchdown. Again, the Foose PAT was good, pushing the Blue Lions ahead by a 14-0 score.
The next Blue Lions score was via special teams as Tre Jackson returned the ball 75 yards on a punt return to the end zone for six points. Foose made the PAT for a 21-point Blue Lions advantage with 6:02 left in the second quarter.
The Blue Lions weren’t finished scoring points in the first half, with Rocky Jones running for a 65-yard touchdown with 3:15 on the second quarter clock at Gardner Park. Washington scored on the ensuing two-point conversion try, as Gavin Coffman found Griffin Dawes in the end zone on a pass for the two-point play and a 29-0 lead.
Washington added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, with the first one coming with 6:31 on the clock as Thompson rushed for a 5-yard run to pay dirt and six points. The PAT was no good, putting the Blue Lions ahead by a 35-0 score.
The final touchdown of the game came when Rocky Jones picked up a Hillsboro fumble and raced to the end zone. The PAT was good, putting Washington in front by 42 points with 45 seconds left in the third.
Neither team scored points in the fourth quarter.
Hillsboro — who as a team had three turnovers — was led in rushing by Austin Barrett, who had 20 attempts for 85 yards, averaging 4.3 yards per carry in the loss. Travis Ross finished with 33 yards rushing on four carries, and teammate Jevin Hochstuhl totaled 11 carries for 29 yards.
Washington’s Thompson finished 8-of-16 for 124 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jones totaled two rushes for 78 yards and one touchdown to lead the Blue Lions in rushing for the night. Jackson finished with five carries for 35 yards. As a team, Washington totaled 153 yards on the ground.
Jackson was the Blue Lions’ leading receiver with one receptions for 40 yards, while Isaiah Haithcock also had one reception, his going for 36 yards. Tanner Lemaster totaled two catches for 24 yards and a touchdown. Dallmayer finished with one reception for 21 yards and a touchdown, and Calum Brown had a catch for three yards.
Lemaster and Ian Rogers-Wright each had a sack on defense for Washington, and Jackson had an interception against Hillsboro.
Next for the Indians (0-1, 3-3) is an FAC road game in Week 7 at Jackson (1-0, 4-2) with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Washington (1-0, 5-1) is scheduled to host the McClain Tigers (0-1, 4-2) next Friday night.
