Indians, Lady Indians place 2nd in SCOL Championships

The Hillsboro Indians and Lady Indians each placed second in the 2013 South Central Ohio League Championships, using a two-day effort to race, throw and pace themselves to the runner-up position.
The Hillsboro boys trailed only Miami Trace as the Panthers outscored the Indians 144-133, a mere 11-point difference in the overall standings at Miami Trace High School.
The Lady Indians scored 115 points in their second-place finish, trailing only Washington, who dominated the event with 178 points.
For the remainder of the girls standings, MT was third with 103, followed by London (101.50), Clinton-Massie (80.50), McClain (58) and Madison-Plains (13). East Clinton didn't compete as a team.
The boys remaining standings included McClain in third with 105 points, CM in fourth at 96 and in fifth was Washington (92.50). LHS followed with 46 points, then it was East Clinton (23.50) and Madison-Plains (13).
The HHS boys head coach was pleased with the effort of his squad.
"This is about what we expected," HHS boys head coach Bud Marsh said. "We knew a few things had to happen for us to win the event, but the kids rose to the occasion and stepped up. We scored more than what I expected.
"Our kids did the best, and that's all we can ask for. Miami Trace had a more all-around team than we did, and their team speed really helped them. "
HHS girls coach Sarah Horsley was also pleased with her team's performance in the two-day event.
"The girls in our field events really stepped up for us," she said. "Points in the pole vault was a boost as well.
"Our 4x4 team … we've made adjustments all year, and I finally got the four girls we wanted in the event and we got them in the right order we've been looking for all season, and it showed with a personal record in the win. It was just a matter of getting them together and in the right order to make it all work."
The 4x400-meter relay win Horsley spoke of came in the final girls event of the two days at MT with Allison Goolsby, Taylor Stanforth, Brittany Ferrell and Megan Overberg racing their way to a time of 4:07.26, just under 11 seconds better than their seed time entering the event. The team won by nearly two seconds over second-place Washington as Overberg held off the final Washington runner on the final stretch of the race.
"I see Megan and Brittany having a good postseason," Horsley said. "They have cut down on their times and are hitting their career-best times.
"With the 4x400 team … if we can keep it together, I have a lot of hope for them."
The boys 4x400m relay race was also won by HHS with Gabriel Tamborski, Mackenzie Conlon, Braden Wildey and Jarrod Hart winning with a time of 3:37.34, with Hart breaking away from a hard-charging Marcel Pettiford in the final stage of the race as MT was second at 3:47.74.
"I think this is the most all-league boys I've had on a team," Marsh said. "After what we lost last year, we started out building a team, but the guys have come along, and we've surprised a lot of people.
"I can't argue with the progress we've had … it's promising. Again, this is a great group, and they gave it a run. Kudos to Miami Trace, they are a good team."
In terms of first-place finishes for Highland County (HHS and MHS), the HHS boys collected seven wins, while the girls of HHS totaled four wins. The MHS girls and boys each had one win.
McClain's boys win came in the 4x100m relay with the team of James Morris, Seth Willman, John Turner and Jordan Goble sprinting their way to a time of 45.30 seconds, 1.15 seconds faster than second-place MT.
The lone girls victory for MHS was on Tuesday with Tara Karnes winning the shot put event, with a throw of 38-06.50. Her throw was 5-3 further than the second-place distance of 33-03.50.
The victories for HHS began on Tuesday with a win in the 4x800m relay with the group of De-Andre Steward, Joe Beery, Conner Ernst and Mackenzie Conlon at 8:53.62, over six seconds better than the second-place time of 8:59.80.
The win on Tuesday was just the start, especially for Beery, as he dominated his distance events, winning the 1600m run at 4:42.25, nearly 12 seconds better than second place. In the 3200m run, Beery completely dominated the event, as he lapped numerous runners, winning with a time of 10:18.22. The second-place time was 11:05.03.
On Tuesday, the Indians won the long jump as Jordan O'Connor was first with a leap of 21-03.00.
Hart had two individual event wins for HHS, winning the 400m dash at 50.95. His seed time was 54.94, and he won the race nearly two seconds faster than the second-place time.

Hart's 800m run time was 2:03.83. He was challenged by McClain's Mikel Pritchard, who finished second at 2:04.08, as both runners congratulated each other following the event.
For the HHS girls wins (other than the 4x400), Overberg won the 400m dash with a time of 59.34, compared to the second-place time of 1:02.54. Overberg also won the 200m dash at 26.82, improving on her seed time of 27.34. The second-place time was 27.51.
Ferrell was the winner of the 800m run for the Lady Indians as she tallied a time of 2:26.15, over two seconds better than the second-place time of 2:28.78 as Ferrell crossed the finish line uncontested.
For the HHS girls in the SCOL Championships, they were second in the 4x800m relay on Tuesday at 10:26.44 with Reaghan Haines, Madison Colliver, Alissa Hauke and Ferrell racing in the event. MHS was sixth in the event with the team of Sarah Davis, Kimmy Goddard, Rachel Onusko and Alyssa Faulconer.
Abby Storts (MHS) was fourth in the high jump on Tuesday at 4-08.00. Stanforth (HHS) and Briana Aleshire (HHS) were seventh and eighth, while Megan Mustard (MHS) was ninth.
Hillsboro's Alyssa Sullivan was third in the shot put at 32-09.50. Madison Lambcke was 12th, and Taylor Wheaton (MHS) was 13th.
Allison Goolsby (HHS) was second in the 100m hurdles at 16.70, while Figgins (MHS) was third at 17.64.
In the 100m dash, Jhaela Coleman (MHS) was fourth at 13.39, with Marissa Vance (HHS) placing seventh at 14.24.
McClain's 4x200m relay team of Figgins, Storts, Mustard and Coleman placed fourth at 1:57.76. HHS was sixth at 2:00.86 with the team of Goolsby, Tyneika Rickman, Samantha Edwards and Jalyn Yochum.
HHS was fifth and sixth in the girls 1600m run with Hauke having a time of 6:00.51 and Ceairra Neal in sixth at 6:11.24. Davis (MHS) was ninth at 6:41.78, and Faulconer (MHS) was 12th at 6:59.70.
The Lady Indians were fourth in the 4x100m relay at 54.68 with the team of Goolsby, Brittney Brown, Vance and Stanforth. MHS was fifth at 55.73 with Figgins, Storts, Mustard and Coleman racing in the event.
Stanforth (HHS) was second in the 300m hurdles at 51.61. Figgins was seventh at 54.47.
Bree Opst (HHS) was sixth in the 800m run at 2:43.45. Faulconer (MHS) and Davis (MHS) were 12th and 13th.
Coleman (MHS) was third in the 200m dash at 27.68.
Haines (HHS) was third in the 3200m run at 13:01.47, and Hauke (HHS) was fourth at 13:01.52.
In the long jump, Brown (HHS) was seventh with a distance of 14-02.50, while Samantha Edwards (HHS) was 10th at 12-11.50.
Karnes (MHS) was second in the discus throw at 94-10 with Kristina Stanfield (HHS) in seventh at 76-03. Wheaton (MHS) was eighth, and Lambcke (HHS) was 11th.
Opst (HHS) was fourth in the pole vault with a height of 7-00.00, and Haines (HHS) was seventh at 6-06.00.
For the boys events, MHS was sixth in the 4x800m relay with Pritchard, Cody Hardesty, Storm Faulconer and Lane Norton gaining a time of 9.43.19.

In the long jump, Goble (MHS) was second at 20-08.00, and John Turner was third at 20-03.50. Zach Middleton (HHS) was 11th at 15-08.50.
Chandler Wagner (MHS) was second in the discus throw at 121-10. Philip Thompson was fifth at 116-04. Hillsboro's Zach Brown was ninth (104-10), and Stanley Burns was 10th at 102-10.
Evan Mustard (MHS) was third in the 110m hurdles (17.27), with teammate Thomas Schrader in fifth at 18.19.
Hart (HHS) was third in the 100m dash at 11.62, with Willman (MHS) in fifth at 11.68.
MHS was third in the 4x200m relay with Morris, Turner, Schrader and Goble racing to a time of 1:36.15. HHS was fifth at 1:40.38 with a team of Tamborski, Conlon, Dakota Bullock and Braden Wildey.
Steward was second in the 1600m run at 4:54.84 for HHS, and Storm Faulconer was 12th.
The Indians were third in the 4x100m relay at 49.98 with the team of Thomas Armstrong, Christian Schafer, Burton and Bullock.
Tamborski (HHS) was fifth in the 400m dash at 54.52.
Conlon (HHS) and Mustard (MHS) were fourth and fifth in the 300m hurdles with times of 44.33 and 45.29. Schrader was seventh at 45.90.
Steward (HHS) was third in the 800m run at 2:09.20 and Hardesty (MHS) was 13th.
Goble and Turner, both of MHS, were seventh and eighth in the 200m dash at 27.21 and 27.70.
Nathan Boone (HHS) was second in the 3200m run at 11:05.03, while Daniel Addington (MHS) was 10th.
Coleston Walters (MHS) was second in the high jump at 5-10.00, and Alex Hollar (MHS) was third at 5-08.00.
