Hillsboro's Thoroman, Winkle win Fairfield Invitational; Lady Indians earn team victory

The Hillsboro Indians cross-country teams competed at the Fairfield Invitational in Leesburg on Sept. 20. The Lady Indians came away with a win, while the men’s team performed very well but did not have enough athletes to qualify for a winning team score.
Missing several key contributors due to injury and sickness, the Lady Indians placed six runners in the top eight and won the meet with 18 points.
Pacing the Indians were freshmen Taylor Thoroman and Jailyn Williams. Thoroman, who won the race, ran the challenging course in 21:45. Williams finished second at 22:58.
“It has been great coaching Taylor and Jailyn so far this year,” said Coach Rob Snavely. “They practice hard, compete and are stellar young ladies. I couldn’t be happier for them and the medals they’re winning and times they are running.”
Ramsey Haines was the next Lady Indian to finish the course. Haines ran it in 23:55, good for fourth place.
Shortly after Haines, three of her teammates placed consecutively. Abbey Letts came in sixth place (25:03), Brooklyn Lucarello finished in seventh place (25:12) and Brooklynn Minton rounded out the Hillsboro scoring, earning eighth place and running a 25:40.
“Our third through seventh runners have won so many meets for us this year,” Snavely said. “You can have a fantastic runner or two that put you in position to win, but if you don’t have all of your runners running well, other teams ending up winning in the end.
“We have tremendous depth and determination on our team right now. Most people watch the front of the race, but if you watch our next wave of runners, you see our ladies passing others all throughout the course. They’re tough, dependable and love winning. We will need them if we have any shot at winning a conference championship.”
The shorthanded men’s team finished the evening with two stellar performances. Running stride for stride with another runner for most of the race, Corbin Winkle separated from the pack during the last mile and won the race with a time of 17:49.
His teammate, Chris Sowders, also turned in an impressive performance. Running in sixth for most of the race, Sowders sprinted the last 300 meters and passed another runner to end the race in fifth place, just two seconds ahead of the next runner.
Coach Ed Letts shared his thoughts on his two sophomore runners’ performances.
“Corbin did an excellent job responding to an early challenge from the Fairfield runner,” Letts said. “His ability to surge and take over that race shows his growth from last season. Chris also managed the heat quite well and put in a solid performance. I look forward to seeing their hard work pay off at the league and district meets this year.”
