Hillsboro volleyball falls in 4 games

Hillsboro brought excitement for the third game, but it was the East Clinton Lady Astros who played a complete match Tuesday, defeating the host Lady Indians in four games.
The match at HHS saw Hillsboro, when trailing by a two-game-to-zero overall score, play with excitement in game three, but otherwise it was EC who was able to win the other three close games by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19. HHS won their lone game by a score of 26-24.
"We didn't play scrappy like we have before," HHS head coach Amy Vance said. "We need to keep our intensity up like we had in the third game. We don't get excited ... we need to get excited for an entire match.
"When we play excited, we play well. We need to come into matches excited."
For the game the Lady Indians won (game three), it was tied a total of 14 times, including all the way to points 23 and 24. Getting to that point was full of back-and-forth action with the Lady Indians taking early leads off points from Emma Reno with a push at the net and Bailey Patton for what was a 6-5 advantage.
The score was later tied by HHS at 7-7 with a point from Lily Marshall. Megan Wehrung later brought HHS within one point of tying the score at 9-8, and a serve by libero Savanna Cameron tied the score at 9-9. A block by Marshall put HHS ahead 10-9, and later, a spike from Madison Snyder put HHS at a tied score of 11 with the visiting Lady Astros.
The score was later tied at 13 with a point scored by Wehrung, at 16 with an ace by Snyder and at 17 as EC hit their own side of the net.
With HHS down by a couple points late in the third game, Snyder made a timely block at the top of the net, and Cameron followed with an ace to cut their deficit to just a single point at 23-22. Cameron then tied the score and put HHS in the lead with two more aces.

EC was able to tie the score at 24, but HHS scored the final two points for the game three win.
"We received serves well, and in the third game, we were hitting on all cylinders," Vance said. "Everything was clicking."
In game one, HHS and the Lady Astros tied 11 times, the last time at 18-18. From there, EC dominated the remainder of the first game for the four-point win. For HHS in the first set, Patton had four consecutive service points.
Game two was tied four times, at 8, 20, 21 and 22 ,with HHS getting points from Patton, Marshall, Reno and Wehrung, but the game ended with a spike by the Lady Astros to win by three points.
The match-deciding game was the fourth as it was tied just twice at 1-1 and 2-2.
EC took a 7-2 lead and eventually a 12-7 lead as Hillsboro's Patton scored the seventh point for her team. Later, Megan Overberg had an ace for the Lady Indians, as did Snyder, but it was too late as EC won game four by six points.
The loss puts the Lady Indians at 2-10 overall and 0-6 in the SCOL. On Monday, HHS fell to the McClain Tigers in five sets in a makeup match that was rescheduled.
"Our record doesn't reflect our ability of play," Vance said. "We have been in a lot of the matches but have just lost a few close ones."
