Hillsboro softball earns FAC win against Washington

WASHINGTON C.H. — The sixth win of the season for the Hillsboro Lady Indians saw the softball team travel to Washington Court House and earn the Frontier Athletic Conference victory in convincing Washington, winning by a 13-6 score over the host Lady Blue Lions.
HHS led through the entire game after scoring their first run in the top of the second inning as Kinsey Gilliland led off the game with a line drive to centerfield, followed by a walk by Bre Karnes. Following two consecutive outs, Gilliland scored a run off a single to centerfield by Hannah Burton for the 1-0 lead.
Hillsboro made it a 4-0 lead when they added three runs in the top of the third inning with Kayla Roberts starting things off with a one-out walk on four straight pitches. Next was a single by Camryn Spruell to left field, with Roberts scoring on an error, which also moved Spurell to second base.
Two runs crossed the late on the ensuing at-bat, as Gilliland hit a home run to left field, putting Hillsboro ahead by a 4-0 lead. KaleyJo Myers also had a single in the inning with two outs but was left stranded on the bases.
Washington got to within a run by building a three-run inning of their own, but HHS kept the lead at 4-3 after three complete innings.
HHS added to their advantage with two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth, three more runs in the sixth and another three-run inning for the top of the seventh. Washington had three runs cross the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In all, the Lady Indians totaled 12 hits and had one error, while Washington finished with four hits and six errors.
Spurell was 3-for-5 on the day with three run, two RBI and a home run.
Gilliland was 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBI, a home run, a steal and a walk.
Myers went 3-for-5 with one RBI in the HHS victory.
Also for the Lady Indians, Roberts finished 1-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, one walk and a double. Emma Taylor was 1-for-5 with one RBI, and Burton finished 1-for-3 with one run, two RBI and a walk. The Lady Indians also had Karnes score a run.
Roberts was the winning pitcher, as she pitched a complete game of seven innings. She allowed six earned runs on four hits and five walks, while striking out 11 batters on 117 pitches.
HHS improves to 6-2 overall as the Lady Indians have won six consecutive games. They are also now 2-0 in the FAC.
