Hillsboro runners compete at regional cross-country meet; Thoroman qualifies for state

The Hillsboro Indians were well-represented at the Division II Regional Championship Meet on Oct. 29 at Pickerington North High School, where the Lady Indians had their first runner qualify for state in 20 years.
Freshman Taylor Thoroman is advancing to state following her 13th-place finish Saturday.
Speaking of Thoroman’s performance, head coach Rob Snavely remarked, “We knew Taylor had a chance to make it out, but you can’t take anything for granted. Everyone here is an all-conference or all-district athlete, but Taylor is a special athlete also. She works hard and is so coachable. She always has a smile on. I don’t know if she knows it yet or not, but she ran faster today than any other Hillsboro lady has run in at least the last 22 years.”
Thoroman will run at the state championship meet Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1:45 p.m. at Fortress Obetz. She is the first Hillsboro Lady Indian to compete at the state meet since Jennifer Reinholz in 2002 and Randi Garrison in 2000.
The Hillsboro Lady Indians qualified for the regional race as a team. When all 163 runners had finished the course, HHS came in 14th place, short of the mark needed to advance as a team to the state championship meet.
“It has been a fantastic ride with this group of young ladies,” Snavely said. “As I have said before, we started the year with two goals, to win the FAC and qualify for regionals as a team. We accomplished those and wanted to see how we stacked up against our region’s best and find out if we were state meet caliber. We learned a lot about what it will take if we want to take that next step and get to the state meet.”
The first Hillsboro runner to finish her race was Thoroman. Sprinting the final straight stretch against several runners, Thoroman finished in 13th place with a time of 19:43.
The rest of the Lady Indian team followed shortly thereafter. Jailyn Williams ran a 21:26, good for 66th place. Ramsey Haines finished with a 22:59 (113th place), Bree Bailey logged a 23:01 (116th place) and Abbey Letts came in 119th place after a 23:03. Coming in 121st and 130th places were Brooklynn Minton (23:10) and Brooklyn Lucarello (23:31).
Corbin Winkle, the lone Hillsboro qualifier in the boys race, faced a field of 160 runners from around southeast Ohio. Making his first appearance in the regional meet, Winkle finished the course in 17:18, which was good for 46th place.
Winkle’s coach, Ed Letts, praised his performance and work ethic after the meet.
“Corbin did an excellent job today and this season in general,” Letts said. “It was awesome to see his maturity and work ethic grow since last year. I’m looking forward to see what he is capable of as he progresses.”
