Hillsboro moves to sectional finals; defeats Gallia Academy in 10 innings

The No. 11 seeded Hillsboro Indians advanced to the sectional finals on Monday (May 16) by defeating the host Gallia Academy Blue Devils, a No. 6 seed, in their Division II SE District Sectional Semifinal game at GAHS by a 2-1 score in 10 innings.
Hillsboro’s extra-inning win saw them and the Blue Devils go scoreless through two innings, but each team scored one run in the third inning, leading to a 1-1 score. The game stayed at one for the next six innings, as neither team was able to plate a run from the fifth through ninth innings.
In the top of the 10th Hillsboro, scored the go-ahead run, which was also the eventual game-winning run, and sealed a 2-1 victory in tournament play.
Both runs were scored by Canaan Griffith, while one RBI each went to Spencer Wyckoff and Bryce Parsons. Parsons finished the game 1-for-4 with a double, walk, and RBI. Wyckoff was also 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Griffith ended the game 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two steals.
Also at the plate for the Indians, Corbin Willey was 1-for-4 with a walk, Quintin Captain went 1-for-4, and Brayden Cochran finished 1-for-3 with a walk.
Ethan Grooms collected two walks, and Lance Hainline also drew a walk for Hillsboro.
The Indians totaled four errors, while Gallia Academy had one error. HHS outhit the Blue Devils, 6-4.
The game was a pitchers' duel for both teams, and for the Indians, Captain was on top of his game on the mound, pitching nine innings before reaching 121 pitches for the tournament game. Captain, in his nine innings on the mound, had the no-decision as he allowed one unearned run on four hits and three walks. Captain finished the sectional semifinal game with 11 strikeouts.
Garet Thompson pitched one inning in relief, where in the bottom of the 10th inning he allowed no hits, runs or walks, while striking out one batter. Thompson threw a total of 12 pitches in the win.
Next for Hillsboro is a sectional final game on Wednesday, May 18 against the No. 3 seeded Unioto Shermans at UHS with a 5 p.m. start.
