Hillsboro Indians lose by TD against Goshen Warriors

The Hillsboro Indians suffered their second loss in as many games to start the 2022 football season, as early mistakes in the first half eventually were too much to catch up to, losing on the road to the host Goshen Warriors, 14-7.
In the non-conference game, the Indians trailed 7-0 at halftime and scored their lone touchdown in the third quarter after an 80-yard drive.
The Indians’ touchdown in Week 2 — their first touchdown of the season — came with 51 seconds left in the third quarter when quarterback Cam Smart raced to the end zone on a 4-yard run. The PAT was good for HHS, as that was the final score of the non-conference game between the two teams.
“We had a nice drive there, got a groove, running some dive and triple option off the dive. We had a good drive, we just need to have more of those,” HHS head coach Nathan Horne said of the scoring drive. “This is a game we wanted to win, that’s for sure. It’s disappointing as far as the win and loss, but I thought the kids played real hard. I mean, we’re playing with a bunch of young kids, freshmen and sophomores.
“We’ve got to build on that, build on defense and build on that good drive we had. That’s all you can do. Just get back to the grindstone, be positive with these young kids and keep working hard, and that’s what we’ll do.”
Both defenses held the opposing offenses scoreless in the first quarter, but Goshen (1-1) scored one touchdown in the second quarter and one in the third.
“Hats off to our defense,” Horne said. “Our defense just gutted it out, especially in the first half and really the whole game. It was encouraging to see that. We just made too many mistakes to win a football game.”
Goshen’s first touchdown came from a 30-yard run by Gabe Cope, and the PAT by Gavin Thompson with 3:57 left in second quarter gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead that went into halftime.
The second touchdown by Goshen was a 19-yard pass play from quarterback Logan Haley to Tyler Kilgore, and the made PAT left the score 14-0 in the third quarter.
Hillsboro (0-2) returns home for their first game of the season at Richards Memorial Field. The Week 3 game will see HHS host the East Clinton Astros (1-1) with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The game will also be the annual fish fry game for the Indians.
“East Clinton runs the ball, they like their power game. They’ve had our number. We’re looking forward to playing them at home. Coach Olds is a good friend of mine. We’re competitive,” Horne said. “Coach [Steve] Olds used to coach here at Hillsboro. I know him pretty well. It’ll be a good, hard physical game.”
Last season, East Clinton won at home over Hillsboro, 33-14. HHS last defeated ECHS in 2019.
