Hillsboro Indians’ 2nd-half surge not enough in loss at Miami Trace

EBER — The Hillsboro Indians didn’t score any points in the opening half of football in Week 8 on the road at Miami Trace High School. That wasn’t the case in the second half, as they made things tough for the host Miami Trace Panthers with 14 points in the second half. That wasn’t enough to fend off the Panthers, with MTHS winning by a 31-14 score Friday night.
Hillsboro trailed 21-0 at halftime but made the score closer late in the third quarter, as freshman quarterback Preston Fauber completed a pass to freshman Jeven Hochstuhl for a 14-yard touchdown reception with 1:46 left in the third quarter.
Following a turnover on downs by the Panthers, the Indians were back in the end zone with a 43-yard touchdown run by Hochstuhl with 10:11 left in the fourth quarter. The PAT was a 2-point conversion with Fauber finding Hochstuhl for a conversion pass in the end zone for a 21-14 deficit.
Unfortunately for the Indians, the Panthers answered that touchdown with one of their own when Trey Robinette passed to Landen Cope for a 48-yard touchdown reception. The PAT by Miami Trace kicker Zachary Warnock was good for a 28-14 lead for the home team Miami Trace.
That lead increased by three points when Warnock kicked a 32-yard field goal with 4:46 left in the fourth quarter, making it a 31-14 Miami Trace lead.
In the first half, the Panthers scored three touchdowns, with the first one being an 18-yard rush to the end zone by Asher LeBeau with 9:56 left on the first-quarter clock. The Warnock PAT put MTHS ahead 7-0.
Miami Trace made it a 14-0 lead as Robinette passed to Garrett Guess for a 4-yard touchdown reception. Warnock kicked the ball through the uprights, leaving 6:57 left in the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, Miami Trace scored a third touchdown when Robinette found Shay Salyers for a 32-yard touchdown catch. Warnock kicked the PAT through the uprights for a 21-0 lead with 55 seconds left in the second quarter, a score that stood at halftime.
For the Indians, Fauber finished 6-of-11 for 73 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
In the rushing game, Hillsboro was led by Austin Barrett, who had 19 carries for 84 yards. Hochstuhl finished with seven carries for 66 yards and a touchdown, as he averaged 9.4 yards per carry. Dom Smart totaled six carries for five yards in the game.
For the passing game, Hochstuhl led the Indians with three receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. Also for the Indians, on defense, Jack Wagoner had an interception. Dorian Stewart totaled three tackles for loss and a sack on defense for HHS.
Miami Trace quarterback Robinette finished 10-of-19 for 185 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception.
The Panthers’ leading rusher was LeBeau with 91 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, followed by Evan Colegrove with two carries for 22 yards. The receiving leader for MTHS was Cope with four receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. Guess totaled five receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Salyers had one catch for 32 yards and a touchdown.
Next for the Hillsboro Indians (0-3, 3-5) is a Week 9 home game against the Chillicothe Cavaliers (2-1, 6-2) on Friday, Oct. 14 at Richards Memorial Field with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Miami Trace (1-2, 3-5) will host a home game on Week 9 when they face the McClain Tigers (0-3, 4-4) at 7 p.m.
