High School Football Pregame Notebook: Week 2

With the first week of high school football in the books, it’s now time to focus on what’s ahead for Week 2. There is a lot of non-conference action on the schedule for this week’s games, including the teams in the Frontier Athletic Conference looking to add to the 4-2 mark they had last Friday night in non-conference games.
Before we get too in depth into things, here are the schedules for the Frontier Athletic Conference (FAC) and Scioto Valley Conference (SVC).
FAC Football Week 2 Schedule
- Hillsboro Indians (0-1) at Goshen Warriors (0-1)
- McClain Tigers (1-0) vs. Northwest Mohawks (1-0)
- Washington Blue Lions (1-0) vs. Western Brown Broncos (1-0)
- Miami Trace Panthers (0-1) at Wilmington Hurricane (0-1)
- Jackson Ironmen (1-0) vs. Ironton Tigers (1-0)
- Chillicothe Cavaliers (1-0) vs. London Red Raiders (0-1).
SVC Football Schedule Week 2 Schedule
- Adena Warriors (0-1) vs. Fairfield Christian Academy Knights (0-1)
- Huntington Huntsmen (0-1) vs. Eastern Eagles (0-1)
- Paint Valley Bearcats (1-0) vs. West Jefferson Roughriders (0-1)
- Piketon Redstreaks (1-0) at Oak Hill Oaks (1-0)
- Southeastern Panthers (0-1) vs. Circleville Tigers (1-0)
- Unioto Shermans (1-0) at Amanda-Clearcreek Aces (0-1)
- Westfall Mustangs (1-0) at Logan Elm Braves (0-1)
- Zane Trace Pioneers (1-0) at Madison-Plains Golden Eagles (0-1).
One of the games that jumps off the page for Week 2 is in the FAC, where Jackson hosts Ironton. This is a big-time matchup filled with talented players and great traditions for both football programs. Last week, Jackson defeated Logan, 35-8, and Ironton is coming off a 12-3 win over Wheelersburg. It is safe to say the non-conference schedule for Ironton is tough with their first two games of the season.
Last season, these two teams faced each other where Ironton won 13-10, as Jackson finished the season 11-3 overall, while Ironton went 11-2. This is probably the Game of the Week in high school football in the area.
It is going to be interesting to see how the outcomes of the rest of the FAC turn out, as four of the schools in the conference were winners last Friday night. Miami Trace and Hillsboro have good opportunities in front of them this Friday night because their opponents are also looking for their first wins of the season.
Another game in the FAC that stands out is Washington hosting Western Brown, as we all know how good Drew Novak is. He threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns against Hillsboro, while also having a rushing touchdown too. It will be fun to see how Washington plays Novak and the Broncos at Gardner Park in Washington Court House, as this game could have some big-time plays from both teams. Last season WBHS defeated Washington, 43-26.
Looking at the SVC, Paint Valley is coming off a strong offensive performance where Paint Valley's Carson Free had five receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown. Paint Valley's Dom Chambers finished with 15 carries for 119 yards and one touchdown, averaging 7.9 yards per carry.
Then there was Paint Valley senior quarterback Cavan Cooper, who was 10-of-18 for 211 yards passing, with two touchdown passes and no interceptions, while also having 16 rushes for 137 yards and three rushing touchdowns in Paint Valley's 42-26 win over Blanchester.
Their game with West Jefferson will be fun as the Roughriders usually have a quality program and team each season. Last year, WJHS defeated Paint Valley, 41-6.
