High School FAC Football Pregame Notebook: Week 3

Week 3 has arrived for the Ohio high school football season, and there have been some big moments thus far for teams in the Frontier Athletic Conference, as the fun has just begun.
First, let’s look at Friday’s schedule for both conferences:
FAC - Week 3 (Friday, Sept. 2)
Hillsboro Indians (0-2) vs. East Clinton Astros (1-1)
Chillicothe Cavaliers (2-0) vs. Westerville North Warriors (1-1)
Jackson Ironmen (1-1) at Tri-Valley Scotties (1-1)
McClain Tigers (2-0) vs. Zane Trace Pioneers (2-0)
Miami Trace Panthers (1-1) at Logan Elm Braves (1-1)
Washington Blue Lions (1-1) vs. Paint Valley Bearcats (1-1).
Here are some thoughts for the upcoming FAC games:
- The Hillsboro Indians are not only looking for their first win of the ’22 season, but the East Clinton Astros have won the past two meetings against the Indians by scores of 22-14 (2021) and 28-7 (2020). Hillsboro last defeated the Astros in 2019 by a 21-7 score.
- Hillsboro has scored seven points in two games this season against a very strong Western Brown team and the Goshen Warriors, while East Clinton has a win against Dayton Christian (34-14) and a loss against Cedarville (56-4).
- The Hillsboro game against East Clinton should be a competitive game, as both teams have faced opponents who scored 50 points against them, but Hillsboro’s defense last Friday in Week 2 allowed just 14 points in a huge turnaround from the first game of the season.
- Chillicothe has been consistent in their scoring through the first two games with wins by scores of 29-19 over Teays Valley and London at 27-24. The Cavaliers are averaging 28 points per game this season, while their opponents are averaging 21.5. Chillicothe’s opponent — Westerville North — is averaging 23.5 points per game, and they’ve allowed 11.5 points per game with a 23-20 loss to Westerville Central and a 27-0 win against Central Crossing.
- Chillicothe running back Max Lee is averaging 102 yards per game, while Tayvion Galloway is averaging 82.5 yards per game receiving in ’22 through two games. CHS quarterback Mason Doughty is 22-of-37 for 348 yards with four touchdowns and one interception through two games. He also has one rushing touchdown.
- Jackson has played a tremendous schedule in their first two games, and coming off a 29-26 loss against Ironton, it was still a good game in the stat sheets for them with 432 total offensive yards on 62 total plays. Jackson’s Eli Broermann totaled 15 carries for 95 yards rushing in the win. As for Tri-Valley, the Week 3 opponent for JHS, they totaled 343 yards on offense in their Week 2 win over Licking Heights, 27-21.
- McClain is off to an excellent start to their season, and last Friday night they showed how they were able to literally battle to the very end in their non-conference game against the Northwest Mohawks, winning by a 36-35 score. The play of the night was the game-ending tackle by junior Andrew Potts, but he also had a great game offensively. On offense, Potts totaled 175 yards on 30 carries and three touchdowns.
- The Tigers of McClain have won their games by averaging 32 points per game, while allowing 24.5 points per game. MHS has outscored their opponents — Adena and Northwest — 64-49 though two games.
- When looking at the two box scores from the Washington Blue Lions this season, they have scored 13 or more points in a quarter in five of their eight quarters played. They are coming off a 54-40 loss to Western Brown, and they won in Week 1 by a 35-6 score against Bexley.
- This week, the Blue Lions face a talented Paint Valley team, and they are coming off a Week 2 loss to West Jefferson that saw their defense allow some big plays, but their offense responded with some big plays of their own. This game could see a rebound from both defenses with PVHS coming off a 49-34 loss. This game is worth the price of admission at Gardner Park.
- Another note for the PVHS and Washington game … last season the Blue Lions defeated Paint Valley 32-29, so this could be another closely played game in 2022.
- Another final note for what could be the best FAC game this weekend … Washington last Friday had 445 yards on offense and lost.
- The Miami Trace Panthers won 28-22 against Wilmington, and it was a 14-point second quarter by MTHS that seemed to be a big difference. MTHS totaled 188 yards on offense, allowed 294 yards on defense and still earned the win with big games from Evan Colegrove (17 carries for 63 yards) and Garrett Guess (six receptions for 56 yards and three touchdowns).
- MTHS on Friday takes on a Logan Elm team that defeated Westfall, 35-0 in Week 2. The Braves in their win saw Blayton Reid have 29 carries for 229 yards with three touchdowns. This game could be a great old-fashioned contest decided in the trenches by who has the best run blocking and running backs, so that should be fun to watch in Week 3.
