'Deja vu' for Indians in SCOL loss to Blue Lions

HILLSBORO — This year looked a lot like last year for the South Central Ohio League matchup between the Hillsboro Indians and the Washington Blue Lions, as it was a bit of deja vu as the Blue Lions won the SCOL tri-match on the final match of the evening on Thursday, as they did one year ago.
On Jan. 5, 2012 the Blue Lions defeated the Indians, 33-28 at HHS in their SCOL dual match last season. This year, the Indians fell to the visiting Blue Lions, 33-28. The win by Washington leaves them in second place at the conclusion of the SCOL regular season at 6-1. Miami Trace is first place at 7-0, and the Indians drop to third place at 5-2 in the league, as the league tournament will take place this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Washington Senior High School.
Also at the meet on Thursday was Clinton-Massie, who fell to the Blue Lions, 55-23, then to host Hillsboro, 75-6, as five HHS seniors were honored before the match with CM on Senior Night. The seniors included: Brandon Carter, Craig Jackson, Connor Johnston, Darian Schumacher and Drew Huffman.
As for the match against the Blue Lions, HHS head coach Nathan Horne didn't have much to say following the tough league loss.
"It was deja vu," Horne said. "They won ... I really don't have much else to say."
What was the most competitive of the team matches came down to the final showdown of the night as the Indians and Blue Lions squared off in what was a battle for second place in the league headed into the SCOL tournament this weekend, as each team had one league loss to Miami Trace before the match.
Washington head coach Louis Reid spoke about the Blue Lions' win, a day after they lost in the state duals to the same Hillsboro team at MTHS, as that event came down to the final matches.
"This was about the swing matches," Reid said. "The matches that were close went our way this time, and they didn't so much the day before. We knew coming back against Hillsboro that this was a big match, and (Wednesday) they wanted it more.
"We got our guys together after Wednesday and talked about some things. It's tough for these guys to make weight two days in a row. I also want to tip my cap to Coach Horne and Hillsboro for the competition they brought two days in a row."
The match that determined the winner came in the 160-pound class between Johnston and eventual winner Mason McCane of Washington, as both wrestlers put on the most competitive, most intense match of evening, with both grapplers wrestled through painful maneuvers.
The first two-minute round saw Johnston lead 2-1 as he scored with a takedown, and McCane scored a point with an escape. In the second round, McCane took a 4-2 lead with a three-point move, and in the final round, Johnston added four points, but McCane added two points for a 6-4 win.
"We just had outstanding efforts everywhere," Reid said. "Again, we won the key matches, and I'm proud of our team effort and unity. Our guys gave each other support and cheered each other on, and that was a big factor.

"The kids really did what we asked of them."
The first match of the dual between the Blue Lions and Indians began with Drew Huffman winning with a 6-4 decision. Huffman trailed 2-1 after the first round in his 170-pound match against Washington's Anderson, but the HHS senior tied the match at 3-3 after the second period as he scored two points on a reversal. In the third period, Huffman outscored Anderson, 3-1.
With HHS leading 3-0, the Blue Lions returned the favor by winning the 182-pound match as Hawk defeated Schumacher won by a 5-2 decision.
Washington then went ahead 9-3 with a pin fall win as Seth Haines defeated Mosley at 195 pounds.
The Blue Lion lead increased to 15-3 as Tyler Riley won the 220-pound match with a pin fall over Skylar Murphy.
In the 285-pound weight class, the Indians jumped six points as Jesse Hale pinned Washington's Zach Murphy in the third period at 4:44, cutting the Blue Lion lead to 15-9.
Following the heavyweight match, the 106-pound grapplers took to the mat, where Carter won in 17 seconds via pin fall, tying the score at 15.
At 113 pounds, Washington regained the lead as Shawn Murphy defeated Matt West in a close, three-period match by a 3-1 score, as Murphy scored two points in the first period and one in the third, while West added his one point in the second with an escape.
HHS took the lead following the 130-pound match as Ryan Kelley pinned Seth Thomas in 1:00 to put the Indians ahead, 21-18.
Washington returned the favor, as they took the lead when Kole Trigg pinned Toby Warrington at 126 pounds. WSHS extended their lead to 27-21 as Wilson (WSHS) defeated Cody Whaley, 9-4.
Craig Jackson helped bring the Indians back a little closer to the lead as he won a 9-5 decision over Anthony Smith, making it a 27-24 WSHS advantage.
At 145 pounds, Tye Smith of Washington defeated Dillon Hunick with an 8-3 decision. Hunick added one point in the second period and two points in the third period.
Kordell Ford brought the Indians to within two points of tying the score with a major decision win (12-2) over Jimmy VanDyke, which added four points to the HHS team score in the next-to-last match of the dual.
As for the Indians' first match against the Clinton-Massie Falcons, winning their matches were Johnston (major decision), Schumacher (pin fall), Mosley (forfeit), Murphy (forfeit), Hale (forfeit), Carter (pin fall), West (forfeit), Kelley (pin fall), Warrington (pin fall), Whaley (pin fall), Jackson (11-5 decision), Hunick (pin fall) and Ford (pin fall).
