Cavs soak Indians, 54-11, on rainy Homecoming night

With a heavy pre-game downpour dampening the Hillsboro Homecoming festivities, the Indians struggled all night, before losing a non-league contest to the Chillicothe Cavaliers, 54-11, Friday at Richards Memorial Field.
Shortly after varsity cheerleader Jessica Aber was crowned Homecoming queen and varsity football player Tyia Cumberland was crowned king in the pregame ceremonies, Chillicothe made short work of the Indians.
After Jarrod Hart put the Tribe on the board with a first-period field goal, the Cavaliers answered with a Jalen Jones touchdown run from 14 yards out at the 7:30 mark. Two minutes later, Chillicothe running back Tim Beard added a 21-yard scoring run and the Cavs were up 12-0 after the two-point conversion failed.
Intermittent rain showers continued for much of the opening quarter, in what proved to be a lackluster performance by the Indians against the winless Cavaliers.
Chillicothe extended its lead on the first play of the second period when quarterback Ryan Mathis fired an 18-yard scoring strike to Zach Johnson. Noah Valentine's kick split the uprights, and it was a 19-3 game.
Christian Wildey returned Valentine's kickoff to the Hillsboro 20. Wildey then picked up three yards on a first-down carry. After a second down incompletion by quarterback Chase Gilliland, Corey Wagner intercepted the Indians' QB on third down.
Jones pushed the margin to 26-3 on a three-yard TD run with 7:29 left in the half.
After an exchange of possessions, Chillicothe started its next series at the Hillsboro 35. On first-and-10, Hillsboro senior Casey Woodyard brought the Homecoming crowd to their feet by scooping up a Cavs' fumble and outracing 11 players to the end zone with 6:17 on the clock. Gilliland ran wide left for the goal line and the two-point conversion to make it 26-11.
It was as close as the Indians would get.
Mathis responded with a 22-yard TD pass to Beard, followed by a defensive touchdown when Donald Turley returned a Gilliland fumble 40 yards for a touchdown. The half ended with Chillicothe in command, 40-11.
Late in the third quarter, Beard added another Cavs' TD to make it 47-11.
Markel Cain tacked on a 60-yard touchdown run in the fourth period, giving Chillicothe a 54-11 advantage.
Beard led the Cavs with 81 yards rushing.
Wesley Sears led Hillsboro with 26 yards rushing on three second-half carries.
Hillsboro – which had five turnovers – falls to 0-6, while Chillicothe (1-5) wins its first game of the season.
Jerrod Dornbusch and Dillon Hunick each had several tackles for the Tribe's defense.
The Indians travel to Madison-Plains on Friday, Oct. 7.
